Rounding Up The Winners And Videos From The VGAs

I’ll respectfully disagree with Geoff Keighley, the announcement of Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 doesn’t quite deliver the “biggest surprise premiere!” thrill he told us to expect. Granted, the Spike Video Game Awards have a history that is all of seven broadcasts long.

It just seems a little soon for this. So soon, Left 4 Dead players have announced they’re boycotting it. Hey-oh!!! OK, that’s a groaner; at least it wasn’t half as awkward as Stephen A. Smith last night.

Anyway, the 2009 Video Game Awards did hand out some hardware and pimp some new games. We’ve already posted the Batman and Medal of Honor trailers, and the Halo: Reach opening cinematic. Here are the rest of the major videos from last night’s broadcast (via Gametrailers), with a list of all of last night’s award winners at the bottom.

Megan Fox and Hugh Jackman for best performances? Do we really need to pander to sub-par celebrities, although Jackman is pretty good. But Fox is a slut so must have been why she was chosen.

My thoughts exactly. How the hell did she beat out the entire female cast of both Uncharted 2, AND Dragon Age? WTF?

Best Human Female awards does not go to best voice acting

The Best Human female and male award is for an actor who was actually portrayed as they are in the film so it goes to movie games all the tiem

The voice actors for Elena and Chloe are not Elena and Chloe so don’t count.

That’s why its a complete farce award.

Most anticipated game of 2010? What the heck?

Is this a buy-in category? You know, like an auction by the VGA people so one lucky Publisher has at least one fake award to put on the advertising? “WINNER: Most Anticipated game 2010!” etc.

I think you’d be taking a narrow view of the world choosing God of War III. With StarCraft II, Gran Turismo 4 and Halo Reach Expected next year, I’m very surprised GoWIII got the gong for that category.

    GOTY!!!! w00t!!
so glad Uncharted won that! it is the only game that truly deserved it. a lot of people were saying MW2 but that should have been DLC for COD4 really. it is ok but thats about it. Naughty Dog produced an epic game, the only game this year that has really wowed people.

Glad Uncharted 2 won it (well, I would have reaaaaly liked Dragon Age to be nominated and win it, but Uncharted 2 is the next best thing, and anything but freaking MW2… best shooter maybe, but mostly “best hype to create the biggest possible day 1 multiplayer community”, which is really what a shooter needs more than it needs to be non-buggy or even balanced.

These awards are weird and confusing. Uncharted wins GotY and best graphics, but is beaten by AC2 for Best Action/Adventure? How the heck does that work?

And Left 4 Dead 2 as best 360 game (ignoring the gimped AU release for a second) I don’t get. It lost Best Shooter to MW2, but it’s a better 360 game? And surely Left 4 Dead 2 is better suited to the PC, but on PC it was beaten by Dragon Age. But Dragon Age is also on Xbox 360… Now my head hurts.

      Completely agree…

it’s like the pick the ‘best’ award first and then remove it from any sub-lists… so it doesn’t scoop the awards… and gives a chance to someone else to win something…

Logic should mean that these awards are drawn first…

      • Best Shooter
      • Best Fighting Game
      • Best Action Adventure Game
      • Best RPG
      • Best Multiplayer Game
      • Best Individual Sports Game
      • Best Team Sports Game
      • Best Driving Game
      • Best Music Game

and the winners of these are used to pick the following, and the only reason why an outside game can win, is if no games from a single platform don’t take out at least one of the above awards…

      • Best Xbox 360 Game
      • Best PS3 Game
      • Best Wii Game
      • Best PC Game
      • Best Handheld Game

and from these winners you get…

      • Game Of The Year

It might be as simple as different panels picked different awards, but some people see major differences between PC and console versions and even differences between the two console versions (I’ve seen gamespot do that a few times in the last year where they hand out 3 different scores to the same game). I can buy that the panel regarded MW2 as a better shooter, and DA as a better game, but only due to the PC versions in both cases, and that on the X-Box versions alone they thought L4D2 is the better game.

As farcical as most of the awards are, I am well pleased to see Uncharted 2 take out the best game award. Well played, Naughty Dog.
