What Were Amazon's Video Game Bestsellers Of 2009?

The answer to that question can be mostly summed up with three letters: Wii. Nintendo's console dominated online retailer Amazon.com's video game department in 2009, securing nine of the top 10 spots on this year's bestsellers list.

Only one game stood between Nintendo and perfect top 10 ownership, Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which was #9 on Amazon's list of bestsellers, which includes both hardware and software.

Amazon.com's bestseller in the video game department was the Wii console itself, with the Wii Remote and Wii MotionPlus taking second and third, followed by the Wii Nunchuk. And, impressively, New Super Mario Bros. Wii landed at fifth, the retailer's bestselling game of the year.

Granted, Amazon.com does not represent the market as a whole, but the following list should be a decent indicator of what's selling well across all platforms, including non-Nintendo games like Assassin's Creed II, Halo 3 ODST, Left 4 Dead 2 and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. Marvel at the top 20 below.

01. Wii 02. Wii Remote controller 03. Wii MotionPlus 04. Wii Nunchuk controller 05. New Super Mario Bros. Wii (Wii) 06. Wii Fit Plus (Wii) 07. Wii Sports Resort (Wii) 08. Wii Fit (Wii) 09. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Xbox 360) 10. Mario Kart Wii (Wii)

It will be interesting to see final figures come out for NSMB vs MW2- I seem to recall Nintendo America's CEO wagering that Mario would outsell MW2 on AT LEAST one platform. Perhaps the veteran plumber had enough 'Yippee!' for PS3 and X360 put together?

I’m actually surprised at the fact that the PS3 sold so poorly, three things in the top 20?, and the PS3 slim being at #17, its s actually hard to believe that more people ordered HALO: ODST online than bought PS3 slims. But didn’t Sony say that their console was outselling everyone else’s 2:1 over the Christmas period?, granted these figures aren’t this Christmas period, but they are a good indicator. Oh well bravo Nintendo i guess.

I bet you would find a LARGE amount of the Slims sales were people trading in their old fat PS3's.

It did do well and this is JUST Amazon - a retailer we don't even know the percentage it holds in the gaming industry. But i believe a lot of the PS3 owners, the avid gamers, would have traded in their old ones for a slimmer and larger HDD capacity.

BTW: It's Halo, not Killzone. There are more 360s than PS3s in the US and the US love Halo so it figures.

The Nintendo has always, ALWAYS been popular, so this list isn't surprising, at all. Minus the COD:MW2 at #9 - then again, one of the most hyped games of '09, who's not gonna want it?

Is it too hard to get a list which excludes consoles and accessories from them? It's hard to ever find one which doesn't include them, or bundled software.

It's amazing how well MK Wii and Wii Fit still sell. They are both at least a year old, correct me if I'm wrong, but they regularly score in the top ten, only to be replaced temporarily with big-budget releases. It just goes to show that Nintendo knows what sells, how to advertise, the appeal to casual and younger gamers, and they capitalize on it brilliantly.

Even through the fourth quarter of this year, with tons of hyped (but not necessarily good) releases like Forza 3, ODST, MW2, AC II, L4D2, NSMB Wii, Uncharted 2, and others, yet these Wii games continue to endure and dominate week after week. It's left unsaid that Ninendo prints money with the Wii, and I hope they funnel it into creating a hardcore compeditive console for next gen. All the signs point to they won't, they would be crazy to abandon the family and children gamers, plus the casuals in favour of a market that would snap up well-made RPG's or FPS's, when the Wii, like I said, prints money.

Oh well, at least we'll have the Xbox 720 and PS4. Nintendo's won this gen statistics-wise, but it's still up for the PS3 and 360 to tussle over second spot.

Love Reggies expression in that pic. It's like.. "heh I told you so" (even if it's a GCN in the background).

The reason these games sell so well is because Nintendo supports its older games with advertising. I've seen so many ads for games like Animal Crossing on DS which are several years old. By keeping people talking about these games, they keep them selling.

Nintendo's strategy has worked for them so far, but I do wonder how they'll be able to continue selling these games indefinitely - they'll soon enough run out of people to buy them. In the long run they've managed to pull themselves well and truly out of third place though, so congratulations to them in that respect.

That expression is classic. Reggie just made my new years...
