Sunday, January 31, 2010 at 3:06 PMMy understanding is that Reggie claimed NSMB would outsell MW2 on “at least one platform” by the end of January. Presumably, by “platform” he meant a console rather than PC. And he was also talking about the US, given his role as Nintendo of America president. (Although a global comparison would certainly favour NSMB.)
So, let’s look at the figures for November and December in the US.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii – 4.21m
Modern Warfare 2 (360) – 5.83m
Modern Warfare 2 (PS3) – 2.99m
So, NSMB has already surpassed the sales of MW2 on PS3 and made large strides in December to close the gap on the 360 version. Reggie’s prediction was spot on.
My bet? NSMB won’t catch the 360 MW2 by the end of Jan, but it will close the gap again (to less than 1m, I’d imagine) and go on to comfortably outsell both platforms combined this year.
