Electronic Arts May Have Just Killed The New Syndicate

Starbreeze Studios, developers of The Darkness and The Chronicles of Riddick, were working on two projects for EA. Now it’s only working on one, a potentially bad sign for Syndicate fans hoping that “Project RedLime” would reinvent the franchise.

EA and Starbreeze had partnered to work on two games, one based on Robert Ludlum’s Jason Bourne character, one dubbed “Project RedLime”, officially described as a reinvention of “one of EA’s most acclaimed classic franchises”. That classic franchise was reported to be Syndicate.

But Starbreeze announced in a press release this week that it was now focused on just one of those projects, with the other “still in pre-production phase” to be shut down.

“We will continue to focus only on a big production together with EA,” says Starbreeze CEO Johan Kristiansson, in a press release originally in Swedish. “Our relationship with EA is stronger than ever, and the aim now is to spend more resources on the game that demonstrated the greatest potential. This game is already in full production.”

Which game has greater “potential”? Another Bourne game or an update to Syndicate? Commercially, it would seem to be the former, but we’ve reached out to EA to clarify.

Bourne is a boring, cardboard cut out character with silly movies.

Syndicate was one of the best games of its time and is still incredibly fun to play.

I’ll take a Syndicate remake, thanks. Not that it will happen.

I would like to think that a new Syndicate would be far more economically viable than a Bourne game. How many hero adventurer games can the market handle at once? Not that such considerations have ever stopped EA.

No no no no no no no! I have been waiting for a new syndicate since before I was married. I’ve since gotten Married, had kids, raised them well and gotten divorced, and I’m still waiting. Come on, you owe me another syndicate now!

The question is, do they realise the implications of not making Syndicate?
