South Australian Attorney-General Michael Atkinson, the man who fears gamers more than outlaw bikers, has given “tens of thousands of dollars in funding” to the group who this week said that videogames were more dangerous than smoking.
In a Channel Ten news report that attempted to link youth violence and videogames, Dr Wayne Warburton from the Australian Council on Children and the Media described the alleged link as “much greater than the effect of smoking on lung cancer.”
Now, as reported by News.com.au, it comes to light that the ACCM has received considerable funding from the office of Michael Atkinson, the censorship minister who opposes the introduction of an R18+ rating for videogames.
The ACCM’s website is the same website Mr Atkinson last year directed readers of his open letter towards to find out more about Professor Craig Anderson, the sole academic who research supports the minister’s position.
And it is Professor Anderson’s research who the Australian Christian Lobby referred to in their claims this week that the games industry “mirrors” the tobacco industry in its denial of the effects of violent videogames.
Remarkably, some of the money donated by Atkinson was spent on a brochure entitled Know Before You Go, in which the authors offered classification advice to parents on a range of films and TV shows aimed at children. Quite why the Attorney-General responsible for classification is funding the production of alternative classification advice is an issue for you to speculate upon in the comments below.

Friday, March 5, 2010 at 7:20 PMThe logic in the argument is like saying:
There are more seeds in 1 Watermelon than a single Grape therefore, don’t eat Watermelons because your chances to choke on a seed and die are much higher than that of death by choking on seeds from Grapes.

Friday, March 5, 2010 at 9:10 PMWhat I can’t understand is why he waited until after the closing date for submission papers passed. Surely if he wanted to sway the public’s opinion, he’d try it whilst they could still make (negative) submissions.
In any case, this could actually work against him. No rational person would actually believe these claims – especially not all those people who have lost love ones to lung cancer, or even have it themselves.

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 12:25 AMwhen they can’t even get the title of cod:mw2 right, it really shows how much effort channel ten put in to researching their stories. and here i was thinking they had more of a youthful perspective than seven and nine.

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 2:37 AMToo many people these days, are willing to believe things on insufficient evidence (in this case little to none). Someone should email MA an explanation of what “confirmation bias” means.
This does reak of the moral-superiority often associated with people who believe that their all-powerful imaginary friend is on their side.
But of course, we have no evidence of that…

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 7:24 AMI honestly makes me feel almost ill that this kind of thing can happen in Australia. Seriously the people who are supposed to give a balanced and unbiased judgement on classification are running what basically amounts to hate campaigns at the same time?
Seriously does this not make you ashamed to be Australian?

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 9:11 AMAnother survey which slants its findings towards the views of those who fund it. Why is anyone really surprised? Those who blame “religion” as the culprit here should also consider that science is the prostitute who whores itself out to the highest bidder. While the merits of the so-called science can be questioned it is yet another “study” which is picked up by the media and displayed to the general public as fact.

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 9:22 AMO brave and intrepid Andrew Ramadge!
Going where no man has dared to tread, he’s “discovered” that a group that opposes the legalisation of R18+ level games has received funding from the SA AG! Shock! Horror!
To expose this link, he bravely explored the Home page of the Australian Council on Children and the Media, and their Annual Reports.
This discovery is only new to Andrew. What he “found out” has been exposed to view every week in major newspapers in Adelaide for some years.
The Sunday Mail has been running ACCM’s “Know before you Go” movie reviews on its entertainment pages every week for the past 3 months, complete with an acknowledgement of the SA AG’s funding contribution. The Adelaide “ Advertiser” carried the reviews and attribution weekly for at least 2 years before that.
The ACCM’s projects have been funded from a range of Govt (both Labor and Liberal) and non-government agencies, and are separate from its advocacy.
ACCM has a reputation for independent advocacy that is respected by many, based as it is, on the latest reviews of research by professionals in the field.
Could Ramadge’s attempt at ridicule have any link to his own position in the R18+ games debate?

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 9:50 AMThe credibility and impartiality of ACCM’s views must come into question when its funding is sourced (partly or wholly) from the SA Attorney Generals Dept. To cast a view that would be contrary to Atkinsons own position on videogames would jeopardize that funding, so ACCM is essentially a mouthpiece of Atkinson and a way for Atkinson to legitimise his personal view that there is a connection between violence and videogames. This is the same man who had a major role in gagging the SA publics right to freedom of speech during the SA elections, so it wouldn’t surprise me that he directed ACCM to make a public statement on the “harms” created by playing videogames. Is it a coincidence that this “report” was released around the same time of the closing date for people to provide their views on the discussion paper on R rated games. Really though, can anyone take ACCM’s analysis seriously. Trying to make a connection between the harms of smoking and playing videogames is certainly creative but hardly scientific.

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 11:59 AMWhat a joke.
Yearly Deaths from smoking: 400,000
Yearly Deaths from video games… 10? 100?

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 5:51 PMone word for Mr Atkinson (and being an AG he should know exactly what this is and be extremely worried about it)

Saturday, March 6, 2010 at 10:28 PMNo matter how bad the douche is, mainstream media and organised religion is so much worse, and both are what gives crook’s like Atkinson true power.
An for the record, programs like Sunrise, and the mainstream news programs, current affair, etc, all are generally going to be watched regardless of what they put on – it’s not so much about ratings, it’s more about pushing their own views and the views they get paid to push.

Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 1:27 PMBest idea ever…
Due to Atkinsons love of frivilous lawsuites because of peoples opinions of him. Class action suite against Atkinson due to his defamation of gamers… and we as gamers being defamed have had our reputations damaged in the eyes of society.
If only i had the money to take someone to court for no good reason like he does.

Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at 9:43 AMHi Folks
I live in S.A., and have just finished up 12 years in the S.A. Public Service as a tech for the Courts computer systems. While not directly involved with the AG’s department, I had enough contact to glean an experiential viewpoint.
Like almost every heirachical structure on the planet, what I view as corruption was rife, driven mainly by the need to maintain constant funding.
I’m also an ex-drug addict, armchair philosopher and by many “normal” standards, a head-case.
I have been in the past, and continue to be, revolted by the nature and degree of societal manipulation that occurs within government – it was my principal reason for leaving.
While it may be argued that Mr Atkinson got and maintains his position as a result of the electoral process, “insiders” will (probably very quietly) tell you similar stories to mine.
It’s pretty obvious that all contentious issues must be “thrashed out” to establish a realistic base-line or norm for any given society, however when the structure of that society procludes genuine assessment due to vested interests, the whole concept falls down.
How can we have truth and honesty in a community where even my all-powerful vote does not necessarily go to the person I vote for?
It’s just plain wicked, and mankind needs to get get a rapid and sure grip on reality, rather than scare-mongering and profiteering.
