The Week In Games

The good news? There are no games coming out this week, so you get to save money for once. The bad news? You still haven’t bought on the great games already released this year.

With no new releases scheduled this week – with the possible exception of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on Wii, which may or may not have escaped the Iceland volcano – I figured I’d take the opportunity to remind you of all the good games we’ve seen so far this year.

Below are my favourites. What are yours?

Old releases for the w/c May 3:

Big Catch Bass Fishing 2 (Wii)
What Is It? Fishing sim that supports the Wii’s Motion Plus accessory and – seriously – a four-player online mode.
Should You Care? Motion Plus fishing should be awesome. Could it be?

Bioshock 2 (360, PS3, PC)
What Is It? Rapture ten years on from your last visit.
Should You Care? Would you kindly stop asking such silly questions?

Heavy Rain (PS3)
What Is It? Narrative-heavy adventure game that plays out as a psychological thriller from the perspective of four playable characters.
Should You Care? You will do and experience things you’ve never done or felt before in a video game.

Just Cause 2 (360, PS3, PC)
What Is It? A sandbox of guns, grapples, cars, planes and explosions that is as spectacular and silly as your imagination.
Should You Care? You can shoot a propane tank, grapple it and ride it like a rocket into the sky.

Mass Effect 2 (360, PC)
What Is It? Second in a planned trilogy of epic, spacebound action role-playing from Bioware.
Should You Care? The only thing better than the best RPG of the last five years is a sequel to the best RPG of the last five years.

Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes (DS)
What Is It? Charming RPG where combat is resolved through a fresh take on the match-three puzzle.
Should You Care? Beats Puzzle Quest at its own game.

Napoleon: Total War (PC)
What Is It? Mix of turn-based strategy and real-time battles that chart the military life of the titular Frenchman.
Should You Care? The tighter focus has allowed the Creative Assembly to polish and evolve Empire to maximum benefit.

Rune Factory: Frontier (Wii)
What Is It? Delightful and charming RPG take on the Harvest Moon formula adds monster-battling and questing to the farming and courting staples of the series.
Should You Care? An excellent reason to dust off your Wii.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Call of Pripyat
(PC)
What Is It? Hardcore first-person shooter set in the expansive environs of post-nuclear Ukraine.
Should You Care? For those who needed to download realism mods for Fallout 3. Or just recall what PC gaming used to be.
