What A Difference A Year Makes

Last year’s “main visual” for the Tokyo Game Show gaming expo featured a hodgepodge of images and a very bland slogan: “Game, it’s so energetic”. This year’s?

This image, below, was created by Osaka-born graphic illustrator Ippei Gyoubu. He’s made his name creating work for everyone from Sony and Sega to Coca-Cola and Disney. Check out more of his work here. This year’s theme is “Game, to the new chapter”.

At last year’s show, Capcom game designer Keiji Inafune famously said that the Japanese game industry was “finished” — in direct conflict with last year’s theme of “Game, it’s so energetic”. Wonder what verbal slip ups this year’s show will hold!

As a graphic designer, I prefer the 2009 visual to the 2010.

They are two different styles though, I would guess that the 09 version appealed to the more western eye, while the 10 version appeals to the eastern.

I’m of a similar opinion. I saw the first one and thought that it was the one the article was talking about (didn’t notice the 2009). Then i saw the second one and was like ‘oh’. The second one isn’t bad either, but i prefer the 2009 one

Well I’m a “westerner” and I like the bottom one better. A lot of art and logos out there looks like the top one (looking at you GameTraders).

I like the 2009 one a lot better, but that’s probably because I don’t have a ridiculously long leg fetish, seriously, those things are like 4 meters long.
