Rumour: Borderlands Studio Reviving Duke Nukem Forever

There may be hope yet for the ludicrously long-in-the-making Duke Nukem Forever. Sources claiming to have knowledge of the situation tell Kotaku that Duke Nukem Forever development continues at a new home, Borderlands developer Gearbox Software.

The studio responsible for Brothers In Arms, Borderlands and Aliens: Colonial Marines is said to have picked up Duke Nukem Forever development where former studio 3D Realms left off, perhaps Duke's best bet for eventual completion.

Duke Nukem Forever, according to sources who wished to remain anonymous, is now in the hands of Gearbox and is planned to be released under the studio's name. Gearbox was outed as the developer of the apparently scrapped Duke Nukem spin-off Duke Begins earlier this year.

Take-Two Interactive still maintains publishing rights to the title, which the company confirmed to Kotaku tonight. (A company spokesperson declined to comment about the status of the Duke Nukem Forever project and whether it is in the works at Gearbox.)

One source indicated that a playable demo of Duke Nukem Forever will be available later this year.

The development of Duke Nukem Forever has been in limbo since 3D Realms' demise in 2009. Publisher Take-Two later sued 3D Realms for its failure to deliver Duke Nukem Forever in a reasonable time frame. The two parties settled their differences in May of 2010 under unspecified terms.

Gearbox Software president Randy Pitchford declined to comment to Kotaku on the matter, indicating that he may be able to better clarify the situation further at this year's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.

3D Realms founder George Broussard, the man infamously in charge of Duke Nukem Forever, did not respond to requests for comment.

Given the nature of Duke Nukem Forever's long and storied history, we're filing this under rumour for now, but we'll be keeping a close eye on PAX-related developments for further details.

It's not April Fools Day already is it?

Just let it die. No one cares anymore. This has to be the industries longest running joke ever and people stopped laughing years ago...

Maybe you don't care but I do and so do many people I know...

        I care as well.

Honestly, I hope the legacy goes on forever. I'd love to be able to sit my grandchildren down one day, tell them the whole wide and fanciful tale, and tell them that it's coming soon(tm)!

I think they've probably got enough guaranteed sales to turn a profit just because people want to take part of the Duke Nukem Forever experience. I know I'd buy it.

Sigh just let Duke die already.. Please

I really hope this is true. Though it will no doubt postpone a Borderlands 2, which is something I would love to see, I actually really liked the stuff that was leaked when Duke Nukem Forever was cancelled. The video that showed designs and some basic gameplay looked like a good shooter game with that great Duke Nukem atmosphere. Probably not as good as it should be given the amount of time its been in development, but still a pretty cool shooter. I'm sure Gearbox would know what to do with it too.

God why anyone would touch Duke these days is a mystery. He is one character that I don't think is as witty, clever or awesome as he was back in his heyday.

They really need to kill the IP with fire.

didnt realise that a main char had to have those things alot of games seem to get by with a blank slate that barely speaks

and in a way this is his trial by fire

if they get it off the ground theres 2 results

it flops and since its finally come out that is the end of the story

or it succeeds and theres more on the way

the advantage of having the borderlands team take over is that they wont have the preconeptions the old team had. after so long in development with the same team they would have spun around so many ideas and each jump in tech would mean they would spend time reconsidering stuff because well the last engine might have made it overly tricky but the new one doesnt

How can duke be any less witty etc then he was in DN3D, DNF is the SECOND game in the series

If Gearbox Software are finishing DNF, Duke wont be kicking arse but only chewing bubblegum.
Never liked any of the FPS games. At least they are getting better and not worse like Raven Software.

Sigh, why didn't ZeniMax buy 3D Realms instead of stupid id Software?

"3D Realms founder George Broussard, the man infamously in charge of Duke Nukem Forever, did not respond to requests for comment."

I find it amusing that Mr. Broussard is more than happy to use his Twitter account to pay out and otherwise criticise the rest of the industry (when he isn't talking about playing Poker, insert arbitary Always Bet on Duke/gambling away the franchise joke here), but when it comes to ANYTHING 3D Realms has been doing in the last decade and a bit: nadda, zip.

On a nice note, he's generous with the free XBLA codes to play the port of Duke3D. But on the other hand, I stopped caring about Duke3D circa 2000 when the last of the creative maps and mods dried up.

Best news I've read this year. True or not.

can't we just leave him lie.

I call bullshit on this but i suppose anything is possible with DNF

If anyone could do it.. it would be GB! :D

And the cycle starts again... will they start designing the PHANTOM II console too???

    Anyone remember that little puppy???

    NEVER STOP BELIEVING

Interesting news, but I really wish they'd knuckle-down with Aliens: Colonial Marines. That franchise desperately needs a squad-based shooter.

Duke Nukem really is the princess diana of the gaming world and just when you think you've heard the last of it, someone pokes the corpse again.

It would be amazing for an announcement to hit to say the game will be available the following day worldwide... go completely under the radar until launch...

the game refuses to die and I get the feeling that even if it was made and it was a complete lump of shit it would sell exceptional well. Who wouldn't want to have a copy of Duke Nukem Forever in their collection?

reveal trailer's opening line... "It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, an' Im all outta gum" BAM!

On a side note, anyone else notice the marines in Starcraft say this line if you spam-click them enough? :)

    ALWAYS BET ON DOUK!

The reason why Zenimax bought id Software and not 3DR is because Zenimax is not stupid, id software delivers, 3DR only promises ! I do want to buy and play DNF too, so just hope these rumors turn out to be true !
Oh BTW, Raven software still can make great games, just play the single player campaign for Wolfenstein 2009, pick up the jaw from the floor before coming and commenting that Raven is going down the drains !

    Yeah, I know I'm not the only one who wants this to be true ;_;

I like the sound of the playable demo by the end of the year :p

Or if your lucky, by the end of the century

Ah yes, just in time for my grand kids to play it =D

Yes please - but only if they manage to work in Claptrap somehow!

With the ammount of hookers in the previous games, I think the Duke's had his fair share of 'clap traps'

I reckon it's worth it. I saw the gameplay a while back and it looks sick. So why waste potential? And besides, it's Duke! The guy that can take a dump in Master Chief's helmet... choke on that, haters!
