Melbourne’s biggest fighting game tournament of the year is coming up. If you think you’re good enough to compete with the city’s best in any of the below games, or just want to hang out with like-minded fighting gamers while watching some freakish skill, you can head to the event either Saturday or Sunday.
With the rise of broadband and the slow death of arcades, it seems like we don’t get that same feeling we used to of pulling off that finishing Shinkuu Hadouken to the cheers of a gathered crowd. You’ll be able to remedy that this weekend – last year’s BAM tournament attracted over 240 gamers, across all levels of skill.
Competitions will include Super Street Fighter IV, Tekken 6, Blazblue: Continuum Shift, Virtua Fighter 5, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, Super Smash Bros Brawl & Melee, plus DIY and Social play. Unfortunately it looks like Marvel vs Capcom 3 isn’t likely to be at the event, but fingers are still crossed.
The main attraction will undoubtedly be Super Street Fighter IV, however a guest from the US, “Mew2king”, will be taking on all comers in the Smash Bros series.
You can find full competition details on the Couch Warriors schedule page. BAM 2010 is being held at CQ, Event Room 2, 123 Queen Street, Melbourne.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 2:24 PMSounds cool, but I’m surpirsed that they’ll be having Brawl but not Tatsunoko vs Capcom.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 2:36 PMI’m… surprised that you’d think that. Brawl has a much larger following than TvC, especially in the west (i know we’re not technically ‘in the west’ but you know what i mean)
I’m horrible at fighters (I’m an FPS/RTS kid at heart) but some of my mates have some pretty high hopes for the SF IV comp, so I might tag along to see how it plays out.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 2:43 PM@Steven: SSFIV will be the main event, so you made the right choice in tagging along. Going to be an intense tournament!

How come there’s no battle arena toshindon? if i bought my psx can we have a tourney?
EXC355UM
Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 5:06 PMIt would make sense given the title and all. =P
As for running a tourney.. I believe there will be a few DIY tourneys going on through out the weekend, so it’s not out of the question.
I’ve never run a DIY tourney, but feel free to ask the organizers on the contact page who will be happy to help you with your questions. =]

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 2:40 PMTvC would have been nice, but sadly didn’t have enough support in the Couchwarriors RanBats. Smash on the other hand is still going strong with no signs of slowing down.
People are more then welcome to set up their own DIY TvC tournament though. =]
Thanks for the feature Jung, we appreciate it mate!

Glad Kotaku have posted about BAM, I’m pretty excited about it.
I’ll be there in the SF4 teams and singles, hopefully not going 2 and out.

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 3:49 PMlol @ CQ.
All these gamers will head there and then think “lets go a drink downstairs” later in the night, where the bouncers will promptly advise “sorry we’re full. Not tonight fellas.”

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 4:31 PMI believe Melbourne also wants to beat Sydney in a drinking challenge too, and not just in the fighting games. If CQ won’t host this epic battle, then I’m sure they’ll find somewhere else. =P

Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at 5:33 PMHahah, I remember Toshinden. Was my first PSX game. Shame the sequels weren’t as good as the first game.
I reckon a Pocket Fighters tourney would be an awesome.
