Two Years Later, Broken Xbox 360 Game Gets Fixed

One of the greatest arcade shooters ever got mangled to hell when it was brought to the Xbox 360. Two years later, the game is finally getting patched up. ‘Bout time.

Bullet hell shooter DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou stormed into Japanese arcades back in 2002. When the game’s developer, Tokyo-based Cave, was looking for one of its best titles to bring to the Xbox 360, the game was readied for a home console release by entertainment studio 5pb.

The end result, DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou Black Label EXTRA, was a buggy disaster. Not only was the game’s original release delayed, but the final product was so buggy that 5pb apologised and shipments of the game were halted.

The issue? It seems that 5pb copied and altered the game’s PlayStation 2 source code “without permission”, resulting in buggy Xbox 360 code.

Then last year, 5pb failed to meet its January 2010 release for a patch to fix issues with the broken game. Now, in 2011, two years after the game originally intended release, a big, meaty patch is finally being released that apparently fixes bugs as well as things like resetting leaderboards and improving game load times. It’s like it’s a brand new game, two years late, but hopefully not too late.

Know what the “EXTRA” in DoDonPachi Dai Ou Jou Black Label EXTRA stands for? Extra time.
