Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure Brings Toys And Video Games Together

What if you could pick up a toy at Toys ‘R’ Us, bring it home, and then upload it into a video game as a playable character? That’s the concept behind Activision’s Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure.

It’s a new Spyro game, but Spyro the Dragon is just one of many characters Activision is bringing to life in Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure, debuting today at a special pre-Toy Fair event in New York City. Developed by Activision’s Toys For Bob studio, Skylanders brings together video games and toys like never before.

Using something called Portals of Power, players will be able to take real-world toys and bring them to life within the game. The premise is that a sinister Portal Master known as Kaos has trapped 30 or so heroes in the real world, where they are frozen like statues. Players will use the toys to free the characters to adventure in the game world.

This is one of the toys players will use to connect with the game. Statistics from the game will be stored inside each toy, allowing players to carry their game experience and leveled up skills into battle elsewhere.

“These are more than action figures. They are inter-action figures,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “By pairing world class character design, world class video game design and world class story telling into one entertainment experience, we’ve given players a whole new genre that bridges the gap between the real and virtual worlds. From the first time a kid picked up a stick and pretended it was a sword, toys have unlocked kids’ imaginations. And how often have you wanted to bring those toys to life, to see them become animated and take them on an adventure? Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure does just that.”

Our own Stephen Totilo is at the Skylanders Spyro’s Adventure event as we speak, and will be bringing us hands-on impressions and video of the game in action shortly, so stay tuned!
