What The Hell Is Uncharted’s Movie Director Talking About?

Hollywood is making an Uncharted movie. It could star Mark Wahlberg, Robert DeNiro and even Joe Pesci as a family of treasure hunters. This makes us wonder, has the movie’s unlikely director, David O. Russell, even played Uncharted?

“I want the gamers to be happy,” Russell tells IGN, adding that he’s not supposed to talk about the possibility of supernatural elements in the movie. “I have total respect for the game,” he continues, adding that his kids loves playing it. “I love playing it. I just want to create a world that takes it to another level, that’s another amazing world that’s more cinematic.”

Russell describes his take on Uncharted as having a “family dynamic”, once again saying it will follow “a crime family that metes out justice in the world of art and antiquities”.

“They’re like the Sopranos in some ways, but they have great taste, and they have a sense of justice.”

When IGN asked out of all the video games, why Uncharted was the game he wanted to make into a movie, he replied, “Because it’s centred around a family, and I like the combination of criminals and truth. These guys they’re tough but they’re working on this crazy case, and they can’t do it without truth. I think that’s cool.”

Uncharted, the game, is about Nathan Drake, a treasure hunter who looks for lost loot with his friend “Sully” or with a female companion. It is not about a family of criminals who are like the Sopranos and who “mete out justice”. Whatever game Russell is talking about sounds interesting, but it sure as hell ain’t Uncharted.

Russell is still writing the script. He says he’s almost done and that it’s going to be “fantastic”.
