Sony Updates PlayStation 3 Firmware, A ‘Critical Step’ In Bringing PlayStation Network Back Online

Sony’s PlayStation Network is still down—this is day 25—but there’s a sliver of good news for PlayStation 3 owners today. Sony has released new firmware for the PS3 (version 3.61) that lets users update their PlayStation Network passwords.

In fact, you’re required to update your PlayStation Network password with the arrival of firmware 3.61, a mandatory update, VP of Sony Network Entertainment Eric Lempel writes on the company’s PlayStation.blog. “If using a PS3, your password can only be changed on your own PS3 (or a PS3 on which your PSN account was activated), as an added layer of security,” Lempel writes.

“If you have never downloaded any content using your account on the system, an email will be sent to the registered sign-in ID (email address) associated with your account when you first attempt to sign-in to PSN,” Lempel’s post reads. “This e-mail will contain a link that will enable you to change your password.”

Sony “strongly recommend[s] ” that PS3 owners update now to “prepare for when PlayStation Network is back online.”

Updating now at 52% chucked in a cd to listen to and the ps said there is a update available. My first thought was psn is back up, but I guess that might be a day or two away. But this is a welcome first step.

After repeatedly getting error 80710723 (turn media server off) PS3 does NOT appear to recognise the “update via storage media” option after downloading to USB stick.

I do understand if / why Sony have made this a internet only update – given hacks are / were enabled “via storage media” – though it would be nice if they let us know…

no; that wouldn’t make sense to make it from online only considering the official playstation websites offer it for download.

I successfully updated via a USB stick. Did you remember to put the firmware update in the \ps3\update directory?

I still haven’t been able to change my password or anything though.

No, I updated via storage media, and it worked.

You might want to download the update directly to a USB, not to a documents folder and then transfer. Also, make sure you have a folder in the front of your USB saying PS3 and a folder in that folder named UPDATE. Save the update to this folder. Then try to update via storage media.

Also, it will not be a day or two away, as the Americans already have gaming service resumed. I won’t be placed behind Americans, tbh.

I am pretty sure we share the European PSN FYI. The only region that I have heard of already being online is Japan and that is it.

The only component that is handled locally is regional multi player.

I would like to thank you for pointing out that the human race is f***ed come the next generations chance to lead.

Update successful but cannot change password.

I’ll need to do it via email anyway as I created my account on another console…

Oh well. At least it’s a step forward.
