Nintendo Developers Warned Of A Future With No More Zelda, Star Fox Games

At Nintendo’s Q&A session earlier today, Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that prior to development of the upcoming Skyward Sword, he’d given the franchise team a warning: either it was the best Zelda ever made or there would be no more Zeldas.

He also said the same thing to the Star Fox developers. Either Star Fox 3DS is the best one ever, or no more Star Fox games. Both franchises would go back in the box.

Rather extreme threats (and, to be fair, he surely couldn’t have been serious), but sometimes if you want the best out of your troops then you need more stick than you do carrot!

I know he’s the Nintendo rock star but I doubt he’d have the power to permanently can two of their biggest franchises.

According to the IGN roundtable he was merely joking about stopping the franchises.

Step 1. make threats about canning franchises.
Step 2. realise that they’re the only franchise customers care about.
Step 3. laugh and tell people your joking.
Step 4. release the same old games in HD and 3D.
    Step 5. profit?

warning was towards the development team, never the customers

I’d respect him if he followed through on this. Better to end on a high note than to go all Bobby Kotick and keep rehashing until all the joy is gone.

Best by whose standards? Let’s face it – everyone’s always going to hold Ocarina on an amazingly high pedestal.

Nintendo should at least make a completely new Starfox game before making a threat like that.
