Earlier today, a 90-second clip of yelling by people who totally deserve each other was removed from YouTube on grounds it was a “depiction of harmful activities”. That would be a 17-year-old getting into it with an irate mum, evidently after he had a dispute with her minor son during a match in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
We’ve been contacted by the young man involved, who promises a 12-minute full context version of this is coming, provided you really want to hear all of that. Meantime, this is what he has to say for himself.
First off, I used the word “Faggot” just to insult the kid, I don’t have any problems with homosexuals or anything. I have a few gay friends, and if people are that upset about the usage of the word I apologise.
Secondly, I’m usually not disrespectful towards adults, I’m almost 18 and I’ve never had an argument like that before. It started out as a kid joining our lobby pretty much talking trash to me and other people right from the get go. Then we started calling him names and he got his mum on the mic. I was like “Yeah your son” and then she cut me off saying “What do you fucking want, douchebag?”. From there she was attacked by almost everyone in the lobby.
So, there you have it. We’ve reached out to both sides to mediate this dispute, Maury Povich-style. Stay tuned.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 10:54 AMI love it how every justification of an argument (particularly when it comes to homosexuality) contains “I have gay friends”.
It’s about as useful to the argument as saying “I’m a psychologist” (unless you have proof of course).

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 12:32 PM“Faggot” is the best justification, honestly. “It’s just an insult, it doesn’t mean I hate those types of people” is such bs. Ignoring for a moment that homo is latin for man in the species, man-kind sense, not male, using anything as an insult requires you to perceive it as a negative label. In this case, he does see it as a bad thing, probably because he has been socially groomed like oh so many to do so.
Remember kids, if you don’t know the actual meaning of a word, and don’t know why it’s insulting, don’t use it. You just look like an ignorant, unthinking social parasite, and that’s a very, very bad thing.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 1:58 PMWhat gets me is that the original meaning of “faggot” was “a bundle of sticks”. Correct grammer and spelling may not be “street” but it’s how i roll.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:14 PMBAM
True faggot has changed definitions many times, it wasn’t even a slur against gays to begin with. Perhaps one day when gays are widely accepted it will change again to be a slur against a new group. Because of that I kind of feel like it has less power as an insult, but I still try not to use it.
Words only have the power we give them, but it isn’t enough for me to say the word doesn’t have power, the people who would be harmed by it have to feel the same.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 11:03 AMThat actually sounds like a well written and reasonable response from the kid. Good on him I suppose for that, can’t listen to the audio at the moment to see whether he is in the wrong, but if what he says is true I’m not about to get sympathetic to the mother.

I’m not sure why XBL seems to see so much more of this kind of thing. Is it because there are more Americans on there (they seem to be involved in the majority of these cases)? Or because the ubiquity of headsets there means that every single tosser on there can hurl abuse?

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 12:09 PMIts disgusting and its this type of behaviour that should have this persons account CLOSED. If you tried that in an MMO your account would be closed before you logged in next.
Having that much proof of somehow abusing someone like that and he gets off Scott free is why FPS world is full of them.
You can bet your bottom dollar if there was actual repercussions for being a tool online it would slow dramatically.
Its a failure of the gaming systems to not enforce the rules they set. In this case you CLEARLY have visual proof of someone who should be made an example of and have his account close.
But what happens? nothing.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:11 PMI read that comment and assumed they were pointing out that concept in comedy in a satirical way. “I can make jokes about X because I am X” where X is religion, race or sexual orientation. If so I agree, that such an idea is quite stupid and really only makes things worse. However if they truly mean that they think it is ok to call others gay because they are, that is a very flawed way to look at things.
I agree that gay should not be an insult or a derogatory word, I used it a lot in school because it was what everyone said. Gay basically meant the same thing as bad, but once I left school I realised how stupid and offensive this was and stopped.

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 4:17 PMExplain “homophobe” to me.
If I mock someone for bestiality, necrophilia, or even sleeping with fat/ugly women I’m still cool, right? Maybe a bit rude, but I can still be attracted to beautiful women, yeah?
But if I insult a homosexual it means I secretly want to have sex with a man?
Take a look at yourselves, it’s the politically correct version of “I know you are, but what am I?” or “whoever smelt it dealt it”. Get over yourselves and grow up.
And while we’re talking double standards, it’s fine for the homosexual community to appropriate words like “gay” and “queer”, but straight people can’t take the word “faggot” back? Discriminate much?
LinkageAX
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 4:43 PMErr… no, the phobe portion comes from the word phobia, which means that you have an irrational fear of that thing.
bapslap
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 4:48 PMI think you will find that most people use it to mean a fear of those feelings in oneself.
Either way, why should insulting imply fear?
Aidan
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:01 PMIn that case it would be ‘internalised homophobia’. It does exist, but it’s not why most people use the word.
Aidan
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 4:44 PMA few things.
Homophobia isn’t used as an insult, it’s used as a fact – it’s a word used to describe people who fear or irrationally hate the concept of homosexuality and/or gay/lesbian/transgender people.
If you mock someone for something like bestiality or necrophilia, you’re pointing out illegal behaviour. If you mock someone for a fat or ugly partner, you’re just being a douche. If you insult a homosexual out of fear or disgust then yes, you’re homophobic.
There’s nothing politically correct about it, and there’s definitely no subtext that all homophobes are secretly gay. That’s never the right way to use the word.
It’s a pretty simple definition, in the same way that arachnophobes fear spiders and agoraphobes fear the outdoors.
bapslap
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 4:51 PMIt’s a weak self-defense mechanism.
“He insulted me, he must be scared of me”.
Kai
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:01 PMI smell homophobia.
Aidan
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:01 PMWhat other reason for insults is there, apart from fear or disgust? Both are covered by the term.
706
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:06 PMThere is so much wrong with bapslap’s comments that I don’t know what to say. He is speaking like he is talking about an argument between 2 people calling each other gay, probably first hand experience from the way he talks.
Homophobia isn’t about people arguing, it is about people fearing homosexuality or finding it offensive. It makes even less sense than racism and any intelligent person knows racism is wrong and isn’t grounded in fact but instead stereotypes.
It isn’t a self defense mechanism to call someone who has a problem with homosexuality a homophobe, it is the very definition of the word.
bapslap
Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:16 PMNo, it’s a blanket term used by the precious whenever anybody speaks or acts negatively towards a homosexual.
That bit about “first hand experience” was pretty insulting, you must be a heterophobe.
bapslap

Thursday, June 30, 2011 at 5:19 PMOkay, I see your point.
In that case it wouldn’t be homophobia and people who call it that are probably wrong (and overreacting).
