Apple: iPod Touch Is The Most Popular Portable Game Player

The Apple iPod touch is a more popular game player than the 3DS, the DS, the PSP, then anything in the world, Apple seemed to be saying today during their press conference.

“Not only is it the most popular music player in the world, but we’re excited to announce it’s now also the most popular portable game player in the world,” Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, told the gathered press.

Schiller failed to follow that mighty big boast with numbers, but we’re following up with Apple to see if they can put their numbers where their mouth is.

The most popular ‘shit game’ player in the world, perhaps.

This is the thing I want these people to get straight though – there’s a big difference between people buying it as a phone and people buying it to play games. I’m guessing whenever apple decide to say things like this that they’re referring to the number of people who bought this thing primarily as a phone. I know there’s a bit of debate over whether casual games are considered “games” but I just don’t think you can classify an iphone as a proper gaming device when many people who game on the thing are using it for simple minigames (or not gaming at all).

In their iOS 5 video they said it’s the “most popular gaming platform”. Not ‘portable’, actual gaming.

    Ugh.

By their logic, the iPod is also the most popular digital clock in the world too. What a meaningless statistic. Hardly anyone buys one as a gaming device.
