Real Racing 2 HD Adds Wireless Splitscreen Multiplayer For iPhone 4S And iPad 2

So, maybe you’re a bit disappointed by not getting a shiny new iPhone design revealed during Apple’s announcement yesterday. You’re not alone. But the real exciting stuff was all the news about iOS 5, what with the Siri personal assistant and full video mirroring through Apple TV.

Developer Firemint’s going to use the latter feature to implement the first wireless multiplayer for its Real Racing 2 HD title. Right now, you can stream the current version of the game wirelessly from an iPad 2 through an Apple TV onto a bigger HD screen. But the incoming v1.2 update will feature a Party Play mode, which allows for multiplayer splitscreen — up to four players — via the Air Play wireless protocol.

Party Play will only available with the iPad 2 and the in-bound iPhone 4S and you’ll need an Apple TV to take advantage of it.

The Real Racing franchise has been at the technical vanguard of iOS gaming, with Real Racing 2 HD being among the first games playable in 1080p with a HDMI cable. Then came the use of Apple’s set-top box as a streaming hub. And now, wireless splitscreen multiplayer. This development’s just further proof that the mythical Apple game console that gamers have pined away for already exists in a deconstructed form.
