A recruitment ad on Treyarch’s website has confirmed that the studio is in the beginning stages of bringing the Call of Duty franchise to a new console.
As initially reported by Gamespot, the ad states that the team are looking for a senior software engineer to bring their “hugely successful game to a new console”.
The language being used, in addition to a later mention in the ad referring to adapting “graphics and other major systems in our engine to a new platform”, would suggest that the game is most likely a port of some kind.
And the inference from that, if you’d forgive us some speculation, is that the game is most likely being developed for the PlayStation Vita or, at a push, the Wii U. The fact that the game appears to using current gen tech, and is most likely a port, would suggest that this isn’t a game destined for an as yet unannounced console from Microsoft or Sony.
Next-gen Call of Duty in works at Treyarch? [Gamespot]

Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 10:40 AMThat console is gonna crash and burn worse than the 3DS. It’s aiming at hard-core gamers, an audience Nintendo completely lost with the Wii, which has about 1/10th as many good games as other consoles, but tonnes of shovelware.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 1:20 PMHAR HAR HAR WII U IS TRASH BECUZ I HAZ ONE AND I KNOW HOW IT WORKZ.
Get real. Wii U has graphics superior to current gen and an innovative new control scheme that saw huge popularity with the DS.
That being said, I would like an online handheld shooter on my 3DS/Vita.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 1:44 PMTreyarch is a hack, who shares activisions goal of extracting every cent possible from the serious before throwing it to the dog pile. I doubt I will bother with this or mw3.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 5:30 PMI’m not going to buy a fps on a portable. Also, as the Wii U will be a console, I won’t be buying a fps that I can get on PC for that either.

Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at 8:19 PMMy money is on the vita. There has to be some company twitching to see if those dual thumbsticks can hold their own with a proper fps franchise. Activision love money. SO why not crank out another hacknied CoD game and take a swipe at capturing momentum/unity between the CoD franchise and mobile gamers?
No diss to Treyarch here. I think Activision will be keen to CoDualize our mobile gaming space too. Probably couldn’t hurt.
Although you could do some cool stuff with the wii U screen, minimap? Gyroscopic fly by wire missles? Errrm. That proximity sensor thing from Mw2?
Even the Vita touchpad has potential for interesting application in a cod game.
