EA Sports Delights In Signing Away Pro Evolution Soccer’s Three-Time Cover Star

Back in January, one of Lionel Messi’s teammates on FC Barcelona let slip that the football superstar greatly enjoyed playing EA Sports’ FIFA series. At the time, he was the three-time cover star of Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer, from its 2009 to 2011 editions.

So it wasn’t much of a surprise, then, when Cristiano Ronaldo of rival Real Madrid showed up on the packshot of PES 2012. And now, completing the rupture, Messi is the cover boy for the upcoming FIFA Street, which EA Sports delighted in calling “the biggest transfer of the football season,” in a news release this week.

Messi, the reigning Ballon d’Or winner inked a multi-year pact, EA Sports said, and it’s a good bet the cover of March’s FIFA Street will not be his only appearance. He will likely grace most versions of the main FIFA game, which releases annually in the fall and has several localised covers. Wayne Rooney of Manchester United has been the series’ go-to cover star across most regions of late.
