Last Thursday the Official PlayStation Magazine UK teased the cover for their latest issue featuring a cover story on Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima, marking the first time a developer has appeared on the front of the publication. Promises of talk of Metal Gear Solid 5 (the title even appears on the front cover) prompted many to speculate that the beloved creator might be back in the saddle for an official sequel.
Today OPM cleared the air, publishing Kojima’s full quote regarding a potential number five.
When asked about the sequel to MGS 4 the series’ creator replied “I think we’ll probably have to make it at some point, but what that will be, we have no idea”. Once again, though, Kojima is downplaying his involvement. “As far as my involvement in the project is concerned, [it] probably won’t be as much as it was with MGS1 — maybe I can do just one stage! For MGS1 I made the maps myself, laid out the enemy routes myself, did everything hands-on — that level I can’t do again.”
Now those are the words of a man that feels obligated despite his overall disinterest. When Konami finally gets around to officially making Metal Gear Solid 5 I wouldn’t be surprised if the extent of Kojima’s involvement was a half-hearted wave during the opening credits.
The Kojima issue of the Official PlayStation Magazine hits newsstands in the UK on November 29.

Tuesday, November 22, 2011 at 7:23 AMI say Metal Gear moves on from Solid and finds a new storyline, related or otherwise.
I wouldn’t say no to a game starring The Boss set in WWII. I also wouldn’t say no to an entirely different fictional universe and characters.
I want more Metal Gear, but I do think Kojima needs to move on to other things. The man deserves to work on what he truly wants to work on.
