    Strange

    Monday, January 23, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Greetings from Sunday, poor little Monday-TAYbies!

Nightwish at Gibson Ampitheatre, Universal Studios Hollywood were competely PHENOMENAL!

Anette is so much more comfortable and part of the band now. They did an acoustic version of “Nemo” and she was incredible. The new stuff live sounds amazing, too. They finished with Over The Hills And Far Away which was the perfect way to end a perfect concert. Seriously one of the best shows I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a lot of extremely impressive ones.

While waiting for bands to play there was this ticker thing on the big screen where you could text a message to appear on there. Started out pretty ordinary with things like “OMG Nightwish!!11!!” but pretty soon every one was trying to outdo each other and we had things like rickrolls (by quoting the lyrics), then “I used to like Nightwish…but then I took an arrow to the knee”, “FUS RO DAH!”, “Zelda fans, unite!”(this one got the loudest cheer), “It’s dangerous to go alone! Here, take this.”, “Shout out your favourite pokemon’s name” “whatever you do…DON’T BLINK!” and various Brony-related ones. Was way more entertaining than the lame LA support band.

In Miami now, went to an Argentinian steak House for dinner and had a wonderfully carnivourus meal, and we’re about to head off to the pre-cruise party. The cruise leaves tomorrow, and it only just hit me during Nightwish’s concert that I’m actually doing this, that i’ll actually be on the cruise again. So I’m super-excited now! \m/

In my grade 6 camp, we went canoeing. That’s about all I remember, apart from some grand scheme concocted by some of the guys to try and peek at the girls getting changed. This grand scheme involved the tricky task of “walking down some stairs”. They were foiled by a cunning device invented by the girls called “keeping the curtains shut”.

Actually now that I think back I think the purpose of the grade 6 camp was not so much to get us outdoors or anything as to get us away from home. Some kids had never spent a single night away from their parents. We were actually permitted to make a phone call to our parents each evening if we wanted to. On the first night my teacher asked “do you want to call your mum?” and I said “sure, I guess”. During the conversation I told her I asked it if was ok that I didn’t call her every day, because I didn’t see the point.

I remember a camp I went to in year 4… it was to some place that had two abandoned trains filled with junk that looked severely haunted. The worst bit (apart from people making up ghost stories to go along with the trains), was that if you needed to use the toilet during the night, you had to walk down a narrow path between the two trains to get to the toilet block from the cabin area. It was terrifying, I ran the entire way.

(Also, we went to Canberra for our year 6 camp as well).

I like school camps :) especially when you’re with an awesome group of friends.

Primary school camps were ‘meh’ whatever. They obviously weren’t that good since I don’t remember much about them and they weren’t as interesting as going interstate or overseas. My year 7-8 camps were at my school’s farm campus out in the middle of nowhere and we had to milk cows and stuff. We did other stuff too like going caving, canoeing and hiking so it was alright :)

But tear 9 was probably the best ‘camp’ of all time because nearly everyone (unless you don’t want to) in year 9 goes to China for 5 weeks. There’s 6 China groups that go during different times in the year and the whole year was either spent talking about how good China was or looking forward to it whilst ignoring all school work :D

And I know Alex Kidd was not the first game I played, prior to THAT I had played games on an Intellivision (or something similar) and possibly I had played stuff on an Atari 2600 too – though I did not become overly familiar with the 2600 until a few years later, when a friend and I blew out his 2600 on a 6 hour Asteroids session.

Not sure to be honest. When we first got a playstation it was probably Crash Bandicoot, though we got Pandemonium at the same time. Somewhere around that same time period we had a NES, but I think this may have been after the playstation. In any case I remember playing SMB3, North and South, Bubble Bobble, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and possibly other games. My friends had a Mega Drive though, and I do remember playing Sonic on that pretty early on. And then I remember playing an old NHL game on the PC with a joystick.

There’s probably more that I remember but none of it really answers the question.

Having a shit day. Was up last night because I got absolutely sick of my current SWTOR character due to the class being really badly broken and not very fun to play any more, so I rolled an alt and took it to level 10. But as a result of staying up, I slept through my alarm and when I woke up I was late to work. “Nevermind”, I thought “I’ll just work a bit later this evening to compensate, don’t want to rush.”

So I go down and start putting together some breakfast. I’d saved some stuff deliberately for this, because Monday mornings are awful and I like to have a nice brekkie. Slice of toast, some bacon, tomato, couple of eggs. Quickly scramble up the eggs in the microwave, cook everything else up and it’s loaded up on my toast. Upend the egg jar to tip the scrambled egg onto my plate and it’s stuck a bit. Give it a gentle shake, and it comes flying out, bounces off the edge of the bench and the whole thing splats onto the floor. :( No eggs left. Incomplete breakfast :(

So I jump into my car and I go to plug in my iPad so I can listen to some podcast action on the way to work. Grab the audio cable and go to plug it in and the connector has wedged itself into the driver’s seat somehow. Give it a tug, it comes free. Plug it in. No sound. Cable’s been ruined by getting tangled into the seat. iPad speakers are too weak to compete with the sound of my aircon fan so I had to listen to the crap on the radio.

Get to work and I go to buy coffee and a muffin. Get there, huge line. Finally get to the front of the queue. No muffins left. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ I’m gong to be writing unit tests all day too. And now I’m also not feeling so great.

    Fuck Mondays.

Jedi Guardian. I’m at level 43 at the moment, stuck on the first main class quest on Belsavis. Really finding the class has become absolutely terrible since about level 30. It’s incredibly slow. I’m well geared and fighting mobs that are below my level, but I’m having to stop and use my quick heal between every strong mob or every couple of weak packs. The almost complete lack of decent AoE the class has means I’m basically single-targeting each mob in a pack. If I run with a DPS companion then weak mobs go down fast, but stronger ones are touch & go and elites are impossible, so I’ve been using Doc. I can’t pick up the packs and keep them off him due to woeful AoE (the high-threat one hits like a wet noodle and the low-threat one is free but on a cooldown) and so I’m either running around the pack distributing my attacks to keep them all on me which is annoying and stressful, or I ignore them and then Doc pulls half of them and spends most of his time healing himself. They’ve also done something to him in the last patch because his healing output has dropped really badly. Meanwhile I’m seeing other classes rip through two or three packs nearby in the time it takes me to take down one.

The sequence I’m stuck on involves an elite that goes immune to all damage during the fight and summons packs of adds that you have to take down. No warning when they come in. They immediately aggro Doc each time and I can’t pick them all up effectively. The boss herself is difficult enough as it is but with the extra mobs and the fact I simply don’t have enough defensive cooldowns to outlast the damage or enough threat as a DPS to keep everyone’s attention I can’t see how I can do it without a respec. The ability lag issue and the issue where abilities don’t fire at all sometimes but still trigger GCD was also hitting me as well. I’m thinking I’ll have to respec tank to be able to have a chance, but that’s going to be even slower. :(

So I rolled a trooper and started enjoying the game again.

I’ve just hit lvl 38, and up until now, I’ve managed to outlevel most of the content by doing all available quests and Bonus Series. About to head to Quesh. But I can slowly see things becoming harder.
Guardians have low damage output and horrendous AoE capabilities. :’(

Still not a fan of overproduced pop/rap with “beats”, so while I admit he has talent, it’s not a talent I admire.

As for the ego thing, I don’t particularly care. Sometimes it helps to separate the personality from the product. Something that tends to be forgotten with most music because the product is largely the personality, not the music.

            I’m starting my own universe.

            With blackjack.

            And hookers.

Actually, forget the blackjack. And the universe.

            Aww… screw the whole thing.

Except the hookers, because I don’t really care for that sort of thing. Well, I care for the “sex with women” part, just the rest of it doesn’t particularly suit my fancy.

That’s what I find annoying about a lot of remixes/covers. They don’t acknowledge the source/original.
I remember hearing a dance remix of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall Part II and people I was with didn’t realise it was a remix of anything. I wanted to slit throats.
Same goes for that new cover of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song, although I think more people realise that it’s not the original.

Reminds me a little of Van Halen’s “no brown M&Ms” thing with their rider. The general idea was that they would throw in something stupid like that and use it as a barometer of how well the crew followed instructions.

It’s such a small, meaningless thing that if the crew managed to get that right, there’s a good chance they were paying attention to the shit that mattered.

That’s their explanation. I think they’re just racist.

      gotta love that sorta thing.

a few years back, when Rage Against the Machine were playing the BDO, I was working the Sydney show for some pro-recylcing group. Anyway, I was talking to one of the sound guys inebetween sets, and he was telling me about RATM at the Gold Coast show.

So, before RATM would play their set, they made their security guys tell all other performers backstage that they had to go into their dressing room tents & close the doors so that they couldnt be seen walking to the main stage. eventually all the bands had closed themselves off so Rage could walk by unseen… however, just as they passed the tent for The Arcade Fire, Win Butler runs out and starts screaming ‘Fuck you I won’t do what you tell me!’ then proceeded to follow them to the stage while chanting the band’s name.

      tl;dr Win Butler is awesome.

Ugh. So annoying. Had someone hack my hotmail account recently sent out a whole load of spam (apologies if anyone got caught up in that). So I had my account blocked, even though I reset the password the other day. Clearly Windows Live monitering systems take weekends off too. So when I try to login this morning, they tell me “account is blocked. we will send password reset link to secondary account”. First problem is my secondary account I haven’t used in about 8 years, so I’m not sure it even exists. Second problem, when I give them a new account to send the link to, I cant log in to it, because I have it set up to auto log in to my main account, which leads me to the “Your account is blocked” page. Finally got around it by logging in on my phone.

    #firstworldproblems :)

PS Please no cracks about still using hotmail when all the cool kids have moved on to bigger and better things. If I didn’t have a number of accounts already linked to this hotmail one, I’d probably move on too. I like living in the past :D

So there’s that Kid Icarus promotion going on and since it’s been around for a while in the UK, I’ve already claimed the game using a UK Club Nintendo account I made. However, I just realised I’m 1 game short for the Australian version of the promotion.

Now I don’t really need the Kid Icarus code since I already have it but I just want to enter the draw for a chance to win one of those 3 Mario designed 3DSs (can’t win if you don’t enter). So if anyone has any spare AU Club Nintendo codes for any of the promotion games besides Mario Kart, OoT and SFIV, could I please have it? I can give you the Kid Icarus code from the email but like I said I’m more interested in the chance to win one of the 3DSs.

    Thanks in advance :D

Cheese is legit and I have no qualms with it being used in a competitive setting. David Sirlin had quite a bit to say on the matter and methinks he has the right idea. Adding additional rules because you are incapable of dealing with a certain situation is pretty derpy.

That doesn’t count glitch exploitations or situations where the only way to win is to play the cheesy strat (simply because the game becomes boring and one dimensional).

That being said, I’m not a fan of cheesing. I still need to learn and losing while getting the important things right is better than winning while ignoring fundamental aspects.

For years, I hassled my WoW-playing (and in general, MMO-playing) brethren about wasting so much time, it being a crappy game, etc.

About the time Cataclysm came out, my housemates who were former players reopened their accounts and mealtime discussions often revolved around it. In an effort to not be completely excluded, I opened an account.

I now have a LVL85 character, with all-purple PvE and PvP equipment sets.

I have alts purely to diversify my crafting skills.

      I have a TLPD.

      I have Loremaster.

My subscription is no longer maintained, but I have active subscriptions on two other MMOs.

Ugh, i’m gonna get voted off the TAY island for these:

      1. Played Dragon Age: Origins for about 5 hours. It is one of my least favourite games i’ve ever played. Do not intend to go back to it, ever.

      2. Currently 3 hours into Bastion. I don’t really like it, and am only continuing it because I heard you can finish it in about 5-6 hours. Ok, this is the part where i’m going to be burned at the stake: I played it for the first hour by itself, and now i’ve resolved to play it with iTunes in the background cause I find the music is too same-y and repetitive.

Oh, and I love Firefly’s music, so it’s hardly the genre of the music I don’t like, I just don’t particularly like the music in Bastion… like… at all.

Can we still be friends? :)

re: 1) I’ve never played a Dragon Age game and have steam tells me I’ve played 2.1 hours of Mass Effect, and 0.0 hours of Mass Effect 2 – so this point is fine with me.
re: 2) I played through Bastion recently, and while I was fine with the music, I found the gameplay to be very yawny after about teh halfway point… the last few levels were a bit of a chore for me. Two things I rather liked about it were the story, and the narrator.

        Can we still be friends?

Well now, that relies on your answer to one simple question.

However, I found Brutal Legend to be quite fun, and it was made by the same studio, so i’m gonna say that Psychonauts was probably decent too.

          Maybe outside observers?

There was some silly business going on down the bottom, but it waned quite quickly.

5 hours into our new system at work, and we still can not invoice or ship any goods. This is hilarous. I have had to plug my iphone in permanently as im playing games non stop to try and keep my sanity.

I like quiet mondays as much as the next guy, but there is a difference between quiet and balls out horribly boring.
