X-Com Returns To Turn-Based Strategy With Enemy Unknown

Legion of old-school X-Com fans groaned in frustration when 2K Games revealed that their re-imagination of the beloved strategy game would be a first-person shooter. But now, the publisher’s revealed a second title that goes back to the franchise’s roots. As per Game Informer, X-Com: Enemy Unknown will be a turn-based strategy game developed by Sid Meier’s Firaxis studio and is due out later this year.

The reveal describes a mix of perspectives where gameplay combines a real-time strategic view and turn-based combat. It also sounds like players will have to manage the expectations of various world leaders as well as battling the alien menace. While the shooter version of X-Com has been pushed out into 2K’s 2013 financial year, gamers are being told to look for X-Com: Enemy Unknown on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC towards the end of the year. We’ll have more on Enemy Unknown as details get revealed.

Great news that Firaxis is doing it, great news that it may harken back to the originals … but why use the original name? There haven’t been that many X-Com games that names are scarce.

Probably to associate itself more with the original turn based game and distancing themselves from the backlash that will happen when 2K Games releases it’s FPS abomination.

Now if only we could get Syndicate on the same track.

While I’d enjoy a traditional Syndicate over the FPS one, at least star breeze still respect the source material in their reboot.

Sounds like a remake of the original.

I’d totally play that, done right.

With the news of the shooter being pushed back to 2013, anyone want to take a bet on it being ultimately cancelled?
