After joking around about the possibility earlier, Double Fine head Tim Schafer has told Kotaku that a Psychonauts sequel funded by Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson might just come to fruition.
“Could happen!” Schafer told me in an e-mail today. “I have found funding on Twitter before!”
This likely refers to Steven Dengler, CEO of Dracogen, who helped fund versions of Costume Quest for PC and Psychonauts for Mac after talking to Double Fine on Twitter. Dengler also expressed interest in helping fund Psychonauts 2, publicly chatting with both Persson and Schafer today.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 10:20 AMIs this really likely? All he said is “could happen”. This seems like a throwaway line, I don’t think it indicates that any actual negotiations are underway.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 10:52 AMHey, it could sell well. It would have a 2 after all.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11:18 AMAm I the only one who kinda *doesn’t* want this to happen?
Psychonauts was awesome because it was a new, unique experience, and creating a sequel would just kinda ruin that ‘first time joy’
However, Notch teaming up with DoubleFine to create a new, unique IP? Sing me and my cash up right now.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 12:01 PMThe Psychonauts story was left hanging at the end of the game. It would be satisfying to have a sequel made, just to properly wrap this up. Plus, all the characters were great! I’d love a reprise appearance from them.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 3:28 PMI’m with you. I loved Psychonauts but I think it’s great as-is. I would always prefer to be left wanting more, rather than a bit bored by the end and not caring.
Psychonauts is a perfect little package that I’m very pleased to look back on with fondness and remember the amazing time I had with it.
I want more, but I always want to want more. I don’t want them to keep going back to it until there’s no more joy (or cash) to be extracted.
I also feel this way about Grim Fandango and Firefly.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 11:37 AMI don’t see why it couldn’t, if Notch is willing to largely fund it I’m sure Schafer would be happy to work with someone who understands original creative works (not to mention he’s clearly already a fan), and if Dengler who’s funded Psychonauts work before is interested too then they’d certainly have what they need.
Of course even if it does happen it’d likely be a good solid year before it got started (depending on what Double Fine are currently doing), then a couple of years of work after that.
Calling it now, it’ll be released November 12, 2015, and a character in the game will have a hat that changes colours.

Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at 2:33 PMYou’d need George Lucas’s involvement for anything related to Grim Fandango.
