This Modern Shooter Can't Come Soon Enough

Earlier today, I made a little fun of an upcoming modern military shooter. I am now going to gush over a modern military shooter.

The distinction? The first Medal of honour (well, the latest one) pitched itself as a "real" military tale. Free of a World War 3 soap opera, it was about some guys fighting a war against other guys. Problem is that "war" was a series of corridors in which you couldn't even walk through a door unless the game said you could.

There's a reason Modern Warfare games are full of explosions. It's to distract you from that kind of linearity.

Here, on the other hand, are some screenshots from the upcoming ArmA III by Bohemia Interactive. I couldn't be more excited about this. The last ArmA game, bugs and all, was a blast. Dropping you in an open world where a single bullet could kill you, it was tough, yes, but it also felt real.

BI have today released these new screenshots for the game, along with word that after E3 there'll be a community "alpha", with a proper open beta to follow.

    I do like the sound of this, sounds like my kind of shooter.

    Loved ARMA II even though it's one of the harder games I've ever played. Just hope they improve the UI. Waiting for this.

    My guess upon release it'll be another buggy filled mess. D:

    Regardless, can't wait.

    Will I need a state of the art PC to run it? If I can get by with the measly rig I currently use, then I'm definitely excited for Arma III.

      Best way to check would be to compare your specs with the Arma 2 requirements;

    Holy *shit* that bottom pic of the two jeeps is the most realistic lighting Ive ever seen in a game???

      But did you notice the weird expression on the guys face bottom right. :)

    call of "oh, look at me i'm sucking on activision's balls so i can have a pitily little slice of there thieving success" duty clone anyone.

      Never played an ARMA game have you?

        this game takes like a week just to learn the controls, let alon use them strategically.. personally i cannot wait for this to be released. even if it is full of bugs, hopefully they've learnt from their mistakes (main one being the GODDAMN TRAINING)

      Its as about as far as you can get from Call of Duty while still being a first person shooter and in a modern setting.

      Can't tell if serious...

      I was going to say something along the lines of CoDfag or idiot, but I think anything short of fuckwit won't suffice for you, chump.

    Downloaded the ARMA II Free thing last night. Horrible Horrible controls. I'm guessing I should use a controller/joystick for the flying and stuff?

      It's less a game and more a simulator so yes.

        yeah, i've been eyeing it for years but only now do I have a decent PC. I might try it with my ps3 controller....

          Might work, never tried with a controller but if you have any interest in ever picking up HAWX 1/2 or any other flying games you might want to look into getting a joystick or HOTAS.

          I recommend looking at Saitek if you're leaning towards the latter. The FLY5 is a good stick with a built in throttle or if you want HOTAS then check out the X52 or X52 Pro depending on how much you want to spend (owned both and they are ridiculously good for the money).

          Sigh...my response is awaiting moderation because of mulitple links in an attempt to be helpful;

    @bjg. Pretty misinformed there son, Arma is an open-world simulation, not a run-and-gun-A.D.D-red cordial-hyperfest like COD. Comparing this to Cod is like comparing Mario Kart to Gran Turismo. I did not expect much else from Internet people who use "there" incorrectly.

    Ghost recon was like that. 2 shots and you were dead. What did they do to the series?

      The sequel went to consoles and went third person and (I think) towards linear level design. I never played it though because it looked like shit compared to the first game and the following expansions (remember them!).
      And it's a shame too, because Ghost Recon actually ported really well to consoles proving the original formula was fine on consoles.

        And I think I read somewhere the 3rd installment will be console only..
