Sometimes we do things that aren’t video games. Like eat food, moonwalk, go to Woolworths in our underwear (just me? I’ll leave quietly). I thought it might be cool to have a place to discuss such endeavours. Today I want to ask your eight-year-old self a question: what do you want to be when you grow up?
When I was a kid, I wanted to be one of two things: a football player or a pirate. Not the downloading-software-illegally kind, but the old-school, wearing-an-eye-patch kind. When I was young, I used to play Monkey Island a lot.
I was never quite good enough to be a professional footballer, and piracy just… wasn’t a realistic option.
What about you guys? What did you want to be when you were a kid?

I wanted to be a scientist. I guess I kinda achieved that, but working with computers rather than test tubes and explosions and stuff.
I want to be a pharmacist. Good hours, good income, ability to work anywhere. I'm not too fussed with what I do for a living, as long as I can still be a gamer in my spare time. Heck, if the pay was better I'd be a checkout operator for the rest of my life. I don't need work to be fun, it's just a means to an end.
Reconsider that profession. You may not have good hours or even a job; demand is pretty low unless you are in the country. Income isn't fantastic either. You put up with more responsibility and expectations (sometimes on par with a doctor) but you get significantly less than a GP or dentist.
Dude - your impression of pharmacy is waaaay off base. Most qualified pharmacists end up working as little more than glorified checkout operators.
When I was 8 I wanted to be a fighter pilot. Now I'm scared that If I get into one the things going to break down at 35,000 feet.
My current self hasn't grown up too much though - want to learn to fly choppers.

Elaboration: I did work experience as a teacher to a grade 6 class... mannnn that was no good for the most part.. some of the kids were such little brats just because they were in grade 6... i wish i could have seen their terrified faces when they got to year 7...

Dictator of a small country. My parents use to make me watch the world news and I use to think it looked great. Everyone has to listen to you and you get to do whatever you want. So now Im just filling in time until the revolotion starts.

I wanted to be a mad scientist and/or a fantasy writer. I actually managed the former. Not so much the latter, though I have been working on and off on a series of short science fiction stories in the style of Asimov. Kind of let it slide for the last year because I already do a lot of science writing at work.
Being a pilot sounded cool when I was young, it still does. I also had some brief ambitions of being a writer-I had a few articles of mine published in a kids' magazine.
Fast forward to today: I studied Marketing in uni so I'm hoping to do something related to that, I'm just not sure what it is exactly. Hopefully I figure it out soon.
I always wanted to do something with computers that let me do whatever the heck i want and yeah I now look after the computers at a high school so i pretty much reached my goal already. Now I'm aiming to be a successful musician, lets hope I am as efficient at reaching that goal haha

Storyteller. Most obviously via writing books, but that's not technically the ends. Could have been via scriptwriting, directing, game development, whatever.
Still what I'd love to do really, but it's not exactly a safe bet for making a living, so I followed other paths.

I do all my writing between 10 pm and 1 am, as my daylight hours are swallowed by monotonous breadwinning.
