So the iPhone 5 is here, we know what it looks like, and we know a whole bunch of other stuff. But what are your thoughts? Anyone upgrading? Anyone making the switch to Android?
My initial thoughts were pretty simple: the iPhone 5 looks dated. In terms of design, it looks old. I have an iPhone 4S, and I like it and all, but I look at new Android phones and think, these make my iPhone look a little long in the tooth. I thought the iPhone 5 might herald a slick new design in response to this. But it looks the same! I don’t know why I find this disappointing — an iPhone that looks like an iPhone, I shouldn’t be surprised! But yeah, I am a little let down.
After buying a Nexus 7 tablet, and absolutely loving the interface, I think my next phone may end up being an Android.

I am always in awe of Apple's marketing department - only they could market a .3" smaller screen as a desirable feature. I was doing a superficial comparison between my Galaxy S2 and the specs shown. The iPhone 5 is 4 grams lighter, has a slightly smaller screen (hence the weight difference, I'd imagine), and 0.4mm thinner. None of the aforementioned would be noticeable, except maybe the screen size.
To me, it looks like Apple is still playing catch up, and will be for quite some time. It won't be long before their yearly updates won't be frequent enough - especially as there are several separate Android phone companies all trying to outdo each other, let alone the iPhone, most with more than one product.
Im rather impressed by the comments here, no flogging off android users or apple user, complete constructive posts, with legitimate concerns and issues.
We're all gonna get kicked out of the internet pretty soon.
I take it back... looks like the apple Fanbois have arrived and started spouting the usual nonsense, mind you it did take most of the day.
good work to teh rest of you for keeping it constructive and civil for most of the day.
I've had my Windows Phone for almost 2 years and it's the best phone I've ever owned. Will be getting a WP8 device straight away as my plan will be expired by the time they are released :)
In the most polite way possible f**k apple.
Also, have a Galaxy SIII my work gave me. I still prefer my two year old windows phone. Feel so clunky using anything else.
HERE'S A FUN GAME.
Imagine today's press launch for the iphone5, except change APPLE with SONY and iPhone5 with... "TALON"
"Today Sony launched their new smartphone, the Talon... (and now imagine all the features)"
Is ANYONE still excited?
If it was the same quality hardware with the same ecosystem and software, HELL YES! Who cares what company name is on it
Want. First, I must offload my HTC One XL.
I still want one after reading a bit more about all the little improvements but can't justify the upgrade from the 4S (esp now I have my Vita for gaming).
It's just like the 4S release tho, the general public was disappointed, but there were some great changes under the hood. This one the changes are a little more... over the hood? But still no big visual change and no particular big feature. That plus the most leaked release in history means nobody cares.
iPhone 5 Released
in other news, Malibu Stacey gets a new hat!
This. +1
Except it was only announced, not released.
This.
Will be comparing to Samsung GS3 4G when it comes out. While the iPhone 5 is a solid upgrade, I feel it's too expensive for what it is. If it were half the price I may stay in the Apple camp (currently on a 3GS).
Scouring across a few tech sites, most of the comments seem to reflect an underwhelmed reaction to the 5.... More upgrade than innovation this time round.
But like anything on the net, if we don't like it.. we must immediately be a android/other OS fanboy...
The upgrades definitely mark an improvement, but I don't know if it's enough for anyone to drop their 4S to upgrade (unless their contracts expire, then it's just natural if they're happy with iOS).
I have had every iPhone since the 3GS and I admit that the 5 is a walk up start for me but it may be the last one. The list of things that only apple can do at that price point is starting to be outweighed by the things apple refuse to do at any price point.
I think it's a good phone, looks a little dated like you said, and I'm glad there's no glass back anymore that cracks when you drop it 10cm off a hard surface. However I'm waiting for the lumia 920 because I'm a windows phone man.
I was looking at getting one of the new iPod touches though. They look pretty cool and the one I'm typing this on is something like 3-4 years old and crashes a lot.
No no no no no no no nooooo
Meh, it's a smart phone like many others, albeit a very pretty one.Still not enough to make me swap my experia play the only real gamers phone.
I saw the design leaks before the pre-order came out 2 days ago/said available time.
I do have a MacBook Pro that I bought with my tax return and currently using it now with my Microsoft keyboard bcoz the keyboard feels really odd to me although I've used several Macs before I finally bought one for my mum which I currently buy Software for it, including CS6. I admit I really like their MacBooks but the annoying bit about it is that it feels like I could never game in it because it is a ton harder to code games in it, unless the game that I would like to play had a Mac version.
For me, iPhone 5 came out as no surprise for me but I would not buy it straightaway because 4, 4S and 5 look all the same but there are little upgrades in them. I am not buying the bigger screen and other things when my iTouch can do it, hence why I prefer Android smartphones over iPhones. I would not buy an iPhone that's slightly upgraded and had bigger screen. I could also never understand how they can sell an iTouch with just plain different sizes and network capabilities (e.g. iPhone, iPad). For me they all look the same and iTouch is THEIR BEST DEVICE they have ever made in their current history. This is why I get into arguments why Androids are so much better and much more capable of doing so many more things than an iPhone can.
I would give the iTouch5 a look, just to see if it is any better than mine and whether I should get one. I would wait for it when they sell it at Target so I could get it on a much better discount than buying it now. If it isn't any better, then I would just stick to my iTouch 4 instead of having 2 iTouches. I just really love my iTouch better than my Mum's iPhone. Srsly.

Anything >$100 is over priced for a phone just stick with a brick!
Apple makes great quality products. The new iphone feels like its just keeping up with the competition rather than being too steps in front of it. My only problem with apple is that iOS looks like absolute s***. Android 4.0+ looks much better (disclosure Gnex user) . Furthermore nokia and microsoft are plain out innovating apple when it comes to design. The lumia 920 is just so beautiful, it makes me want to jump ship to windows phone.
