Monkey Island Creator Wants To Talk To Disney About Making New Monkey Island Games

Monkey Island 2: Lechuck’s Revenge was the last Monkey Island game that had creator Ron Gilbert’s name on the cover. It’s also my favourite Monkey Island, and one of my favourite games of all time. Only a handful of games mean more to me. From Monkey Island 3 onwards, as far as I’m concerned, something was lost. Now that Disney owns Lucasfilm, and Disney owns the rights to Monkey Island, Ron Gilbert is seriously thinking about figuring out a way to regain the rights to the franchise.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Ron Gilbert still hopes to contact Disney regarding Monkey Island.

“I would love to contact them at some point,” said Gilbert. “I haven’t done anything yet but I definitely want to.

“At some point I will.

“I would love to get the rights back to Monkey Island and be able to really make the game I want to make.”

I’ll never forget the ending of Monkey Island 2. I was young at the time, but was so shocked by the twist ending, a twist ending that was completely ignored and sort of stomped over in Monkey Island 3. I remember feeling a little bit betrayed by Monkey Island 3 and the direction it took and often wondered exactly how Ron Gilbert himself would have handled a third game. Maybe I’ll get to see that game in my lifetime.
