Temple Run 2 Is Finally Being Released

In 2011, the husband and wife team Keith Shepherd and Natalia Luckyanova released a simple little 3D endless runner that took the world by storm. Temple Run has been downloaded more than 170 million times since its launch. We called it the modern-day Pitfall. Looks like it’s time for the modern-day Pitfall 2Temple Run‘s sequel hits the iTunes App Store today.

Already available in New Zealand, the land of completely ruining surprises, Temple Run 2 boasts sharper graphics, all-new organic environments, more power-ups and achievements and special powers for each playable character. Oh, and the monkey that chases our heroes? It’s much scarier this time around.

For those of you who haven’t experienced the joy of running screaming from monkeys, Temple Run is a free mobile game in which the character is constantly moving forward, hence the term ‘endless runner’. Using a combination of tilt controls and simple finger motions the player jumps, ducks and dodges obstacles in order to collect as many coins as possible before dying. Then they start over again. People enjoy it immensely. They buy shirts. They play board game versions. They read comics based on the game. It’s sort of a big deal.

TouchGameplay already has footage of the sequel up on YouTube (hence the lovely animated image above, courtesy of the talented Gergo Vas), and the game looks gorgeous, much more polished than the original. We’ll get our chance to play Temple Run 2 sometime today.
