Dr Krieger Would Not Be Happy With This Hyperdimensional Virtual Girl

The virtual wife of Archer‘s resident scientist (and potential genetic clone of Hitler) Dr Krieger is much more animated than the pair of anime girls in NIS America’s Hyperdimension Neptunia the App for iOS, and likely not as expensive either.

Hyperdimension Neptunia the App is a virtual companion app featuring two characters from the odd little consoles-as-cute girls role-playing series for the PlayStation 3. Well, at first it just has the one — Neptune — and she doesn’t do all that much, at least not for free.

Downloading the free app grants you access to Neptune, who will repeat the same three or four phrases over and over again and follow your finger with her eyes as you slide it about the screen. You can set an alarm, if you’d like, or import your calendar, but it’s incredibly light on content. Neptune looks wonderful, even blown up on the iPad screen (it’s an iPhone native app), but she doesn’t do much.

Spending $5.49 to unlock the full version adds a little more functionality. She says a few more things, and you can take photos with her (or Noire, the other $5.49 character) and share them with your friends, if you don’t mind the watermarks.

You can purchase additional costumes for $1.99 apiece, and there are seasonal voices for each character ($1.99 for each of the four seasons). I purchased Neptune’s winter voice and honestly didn’t notice a difference.

Maybe she needs more time to get to know me. As you interact your heart rating supposedly grows, which does something — it’s not really clear. Probably not $5.49 worth of something.

If you’re looking for a cute calendar reminder app and don’t mind spending a little extra, then go for it. If you’re looking for a virtual girlfriend, keep looking.
