Is Final Fantasy XIV Coming To The PS4? Somebody Asked That Question

Final Fantasy XIV's road to the PS3 has been rough. But now that the game is finally coming to the PlayStation 3, Square Enix's Yoichi Wada was asked whether or not the game is headed to the PS4.

"Basically," said Wada, "I want to offer it through any means possible, but only after we've nailed the PS3 version we promised everyone."

Naoki Yoshida, Final Fantasy XIV's game director, added that after the PS3 version is optimised and successfully launched later this year as FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, if they have the chance, he'd like to discuss it then.

So, yeah. The PS4 was just announced. The PS3 version of Final Fantasy XIV isn't out yet. Everyone chill.

I really hope they think this one through.

FF13 was a beautiful looking game, but literally nothing else. I want them to really dig deep and make a combat system that's simple, modern and keeps me wanting to play.

Look, they've fucked around with the combat system so much in the past few years, attempting to 'modernize' the JRPG, a genre that really hasn't translated well into a modern gaming environment, that if they completely ditched the "turn-based" (well, like, not really turn based, but you get what I mean) combat system for a regular hack'n'slash RPG with a bit of strategy injected into the party management and leveling, I don't think anyone will mind. If they're worried about preserving the integrity of FF, they shouldn't be; that ship has already sailed and sunk. They need to focus on reinventing FF completely; an action battle system, everything. We don't care if it's not in the same style as the classic games, we don't care if it's not somewhat resembling FF's humble beginnings, we just want an FF game that's fucking playable.

RPGs have changed. JRPG's linear, turn based model just doesn't keep the audience interested any more. Adapt, reinvent, and restore Final Fantasy to it's former glory.

Speak for yourself, son. I found XIII to be linear, yes, but it had a very enjoyable story, battle system, and extensive playtime required to master the game. It was flawed in certain aspects, most of which were improved in XIII-2, but nevertheless I enjoyed playing it and have no hesitation in welcoming it into the family.

Sorry mate, but FF13 is a turd. When peopel look back at why SquareEnix went out of business, the stink of FF13 will be unbearable and unavoidable.

They'd have to make a mistake that rivals/beats the terrible mess FFXIV was (before Naoki Yoshida took over) to go out of business.

There's an element of 'we have to make it new and better, but we can't make it different'. It seems like if you're on that path you may as well stay there and just commit to the classic turn-based system with only a simple side mechanic like Materia changing it up on each game.

A decade ago the genre solidified as very specific mechanical setup, like RTS, rather than just Japanese designed RPGs with huge stories. It sort of killed all creativity in the genre to the point where something like Secret of Mana has no place in the JRPG genre even though it's very Japanese and very RPG.

Honestly though I don't like the idea of just demolishing the game and starting from scratch. Final Fantasy has been at it too long to just become an action game. I think they just need to create a new flagship series that is a Japanese RPG before a JRPG. I've said before I'd love an epic length party based RPG. Something like Mega Man Legends with Mass Effect's party system and a Final Fantasy length story.

        I like this very much.

I reckon the WiiU would be a good choice to have FFXIV on. It's graphically comparable to a PS3, but you've got the GamePad to use as a keyboard whenever you want. I think it could work really well. That being said, I'll be getting the PS3 version.
