      I think it will when they can shrink it down to the size of a pair of sunglasses.

      I don’t want to strap a chunk of plastic to my face.

         The consumer version of the Oculus Rift is expected to weigh 379g, 90g more than the current dev kit. This increased weight is due to the desire for body tracking as well as head tracking hardware, as well as an increased screen size for the consumer model.

         Even at 379 grams, purportedly that’s not enough for you to get any kind of neck strain, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about there. Also, the reason it’s quite protruding is because it needs to allocate room for both the removable lenses in the device, and accommodate for glasses wearers. Not to mention that it needs to be both wide for the best FOV and sealed to avoid external light sources.

         What I mean to say is that I don’t think you have anything to worry about in the Rift, and that I doubt you’ll see anything markedly more compact in the foreseeable future.

            I know it’s not a neck breaking virtual boy and the tech is certainly impressive – but I think from a consumer point of view it still looks pretty chunky so there’ll be some opposition to it until people actually try it and overcome the “ok maybe it’s worth putting this thing on my face” stumbling block. It might not be heavy, but it looks heavy – it’s one of the first things people will think when they see the device.

            That’s a realistic barrier they’re going to be facing when marketing the device and a valid criticism.

               Gomez got his facts backwards, the DEV version is 90g heavier than the test/concept version due to a shortage of 5.6″ panels, meaning they had to go up to 7″ for the DEV units. The DEV unit is heavier and larger than what the consumer product will be.

   Because when you’re bored and can’t sleep, nothing fuels your insanity like schadenfreude on youtube. Cats being bathed. Treadmill accidents. People falling down…

   it will always be bigger than a pair of sunglasses for a full field of view. Potentially could become similar to a pair of swimming goggles I suppose, but you basically need crazy lenses to distort the image out to cover your full peripheral and you simply can’t do that if you just have a pair of screens built into a pair of sunglasses. Having said that… they could build screens into a pair of contact lenses …. 😛
