People dig up random little easter eggs and bugs in old games all the time. What they don’t often find are entire side-quests which have somehow remained hidden from the public non-Japanese gaming public for over a decade.
YouTube user GarlandTheGreat has uploaded a video showing a sidequest present in Final Fantasy IX that, until now, was pretty much known of outside Japan.
The steps involved in triggering the quest are ridiculous, explaining why it’s remained hidden until now, but whatever.
Really makes you wonder how many other “pre-internet” games have stuff like this lying undiscovered.

It amazes me how quickly history can change on the internet. This is the third site I’ve seen this story on. It is simply not true. Not only did I do this quest at the time, I had a (unofficial) guidebook that told me to do it. The guide book was in English and was probably from OPSM. I remember it really clearly because the quest was boring as hell to do, but the ring was really useful!
And this game was released in 2000. Is that “pre-internet” sarcastic?
The official guide book was a joke, instead of actually telling you how to do things it was filled with links to Square’s site PlayOnline.
prolly why it wasn’t well known.
Oh man I had that that same guide and it was atrocious.
Thankfully the FFX and FFXII guides by Piggyback are absolutely sublime.
I only bought the X-2 guide because I was worried I’d miss things because of the timing thing.
Turned out it wasn’t that hard.
And the guide didn’t cover the optional dungeons other than saying they existed and how to find them :-/
I remember my mate’s X guide being good. Included the big fold out thing with all of Rikku’s OverDrive mixes.
So no explanation as to what exactly is going on here???

I was having a go at this half arsed article
“was pretty much known of outside Japan. ”
Oh Luke….
“YouTube user GarlandTheGreat has uploaded a video showing a sidequest present in Final Fantasy IX that, until now, was pretty much known of outside Japan. ”
How did it become unknown recently if it was known up until now?
I love this game, and did not know about this. I also had the miserable excuse for a guide that has a bunch of information on the website, which no longer even exists, making the guide incomplete. I am so glad that idea didn’t stick.
Anyway, at what point in the game can you do this? I have not played it for a while but I would like too!
If I recall correctly, its when you return to Lindblum during the rebuilding after the big battle.
Something known to millions was “discovered”….hmmm.
Just Plunkett down, it will do!
Never done that side-quest before, though I’ve seen the first half when the first two run off. Got to say, it looks pretty bloody boring. That had better be a good ring for it to be worth all that boring.
Kotaku really has just become a gaming digest.
