Here’s exactly how my short play session with the upcoming Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure went at the San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. “What about… DAMMIT!” Rinse and repeat.
Since reading about Stephen Totilo’s adventures in 5th Cell’s upcoming DC Universe joint, I’ve been itching to give the game’s Bat Computer a go. I’ve been queuing up a selection of the most obscure DC Comics characters to put the notion that the game contains nearly every hero and villain ever appearing in a DC book to the test. I wanted to stump the 3DS, Wii U and PC game. I failed.
A grand melee was already in progress as I approached the Wii U kiosk for the game, located in the midst of DC Comics’ incredibly busy booth on the show floor. The Green Lantern Corps was there, along with the Justice League and several other assorted heroes. I cracked my knuckles and got to work.
Dammit. Arms Fall Off Boy popped up immediately in the Bat Computer, ready to put his Legion of Super Heroes reject powers to the test. Fine. I had more.
Oh come on! Infectious Lass? With the power of being infectious? Fine, then what about the entire…
At this point I began getting really frustrated. Maybe Suicide Squad wouldn’t make it, what with the game being kid-friendly? Nope, they had two different versions, including the New 52 cast.
A massive heroic congress had assembled in the Gotham City setting. Heroes with no one to fight. I pulled up the Bat Computer and dropped in Calendar Man, spawning him in the sky above the heroes. He didn’t make it to the ground, blasted in mid-air within seconds. I spawned Anti-Monitor to keep the heroes busy (they also took out Cthulhu in seconds), earning me precious time to think.
AHA! I had it!
Son of a … not only did they have Captain Carrot, but the entire Zoo Crew as well — Yankee Poodle, Pig Iron, Abra Cat-Dabra.
I give up.
Scribblenauts Unmasked: A DC Comics Adventure is coming out September 24. There is an actual game to play here, something involving quests and the brother-and-sister team of Maxwell and Lilly trying to become superheroes, earning their own costumes along the way.
I’ll likely just stick to one playfield, deploying an endless stream of heroes and villains in the hope of one day restoring my pride.

My first Scribblenauts experience was with Unlimited, last week, which I bought on the Steam sale.
It’s very surprising how much you can create out of that. I accidentally spawned a velociraptor early on, which munched everyone very quickly. My subsequent Dragon was still too intimidating to the populace as well. It pretty much ate the ‘Dragon-slayer’ knight I spawned to try and keep it under control. I was able to quell the beast by creating a MECH. I stomped around in that thing for ages, until encountering its fatal flaw – water.
I was frustrated by how many things I wanted to spawn to solve actual problems weren’t available, and more than a little disturbed by just how many problems could be solved with a gun.
A jetpack and a gun solve at least half of the problems in Super Scribblenauts! 😛
The real challenge comes when you need to complete them four times for the gold star, doing different things each time. (But even then, you have wings and pistols you can summon! :P)
I… have no idea how this Unmasked game is supposed to work. I worry that it might be inaccessible to folks like me with only a passing knowledge of superheroes… :\
Unfortunately, when i gave a jetpack to a velociraptor it caused more of a problem.
Did you try the Large Hadron Collider?
I did in the DS version. Went to pick it up and, well… That was all I wrote, 🙂
!!
First thing I’m doing when I get home.
All credit where it is due. @Junglist did it back when he was one of the presenters on Good Game and I tried at afterwards myself for laughs.
Well, all I can say is that it doesn’t take much to best you! I got this game because I am a big fan of the Legion of Super Heroes, and I was kinda hoping every member or associate would be included, given that obscure characters like Arm Fall Off Boy, Infectious Lass and Matter Eater Lad are. But .. no! There’s no Dawnstar, Chemical King, Tyroc, Nemesis Kid, etc .. characters all more well-known that the likes of Arm Loser Boy and co. Very disappointed.
