Much rabble has been roused about Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies, the fifth Phoenix Wright game and the first in the series to be digital-only. When it comes out later this year for 3DS, it will be an eShop exclusive. No physical copies.
The downside of this arrangement is that your digital copy of the game is tied to your 3DS system, thanks to Nintendo’s antiquated interface that ties software to hardware. In other words, if you lose your 3DS, you lose your game too.
This has led to a lot of boycott threats — “You just lost my money, Capcom” has been a common one — but there’s an upside, too: in addition to the fact that we’re actually getting the game in English, which might not have been possible if it weren’t digital-only, the fifth Phoenix Wright game will cost $US30. That’s $US10 less than your average 3DS game.
Of course, that cheaper price point won’t make you feel any better if you lose a 3DS with the game on it. But this could set a great precedent for niche digital games — and if Phoenix Wright 5 does well, it could open up a lot of other doors for Japanese localisation in the future.

i’m just happy we’re getting the damn game, and so quickly as well…
if anyone is seriously considering boycotting it because “fuck capcom” then please reconsider, as if this doesn’t do well, they may not bother translating any more phoenix wright games after layton vs ace attorney…
(if you are boycotting it over the 3DS’ horrible online shop, then that’s fine, it’s pretty bad.)
Have we got an exact date you know? Keep trying to look out for one, havent seen it yet
I would have happily have paid more for a cartridge version, to join the other ones on my bookshelf. =(
US$10 “cheaper” than an average(physical?) copy doesn’t really make it tremendously cheaper… Capcom will probably make more money with less overheads and especially since this genre doesn’t have much replayability.
So what happens when the game is a year old? Usually you would be able to pick it up at retail for much cheaper, but now that they have the monopoly on distribution, will we ever see price drop below the (mediocre) 10% off sale here and there?.
…so is it still like 55$ in Australia :T
fuck that. nintendos eshop is the most draconian crap i have ever used.
