Gamescom seems like it was a hell of a show. Typically, in the hangover from E3, we see little news and very few new builds of existing projects, but this time round Gamescom was a source of actual interesting news. It was also a show about games, obviously, with some games getting great showings. But what were the best games of the show? Click on to find out!
170 games were submitted, but a ‘jury of experts’ deemed the following games worthy of awards…
Best Console Game, Sony Playstation
Destiny (Activision Blizzard)Best Console Game, Nintendo WII
Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo Europe)Best Console Game, Microsoft Xbox
Titanfall (Electronic Arts)Best Next Generation, Console
Titanfall (Electronic Arts)Best Action Game
Destiny (Activision Blizzard)Best Role Playing Game
The Elder Scrolls Online (ZeniMax Germany GmbH)Best Racing Game
Forza Motorsport 5 (Microsoft Ltd)Best Sports Game
FIFA 14 (Electronic Arts)Best Simulation Game
WarThunder (Gaijin Entertainment)Best Family Game
Mario Kart 8 (Nintendo Europe GmbH)Best Hardware incl. Peripheral

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds (Nintendo Europe GmbH)Best Online Multiplayer Game
Destiny (Activision Blizzard Deutschland GmbH)Best PC Game
Battlefield 4 (Electronic Arts)Best Social/Casual/Online Game
The Elder Scrolls Online (ZeniMax Germany)
It seems like Gamescom was a massive success in general, with increases in attendance. It’s to be expected in a year stacked with new console launches, but still — it’s heartening to hear that an event like Gamescom is growing as opposed to shrinking.

Gamescom was a bit of a disappointment for me personally. Expected much more news or gameplay videos shown.
It was pretty much just giving playable versions of all the E3 announcements.
I’ll never understand how they pick these, so the nitpicking begins.
Best Console Game, Sony Playstation
Destiny (Activision Blizzard)
It’s multiplatform. There’s plenty of PS4 exclusives
Best Online Multiplayer Game
Destiny (Activision Blizzard Deutschland GmbH)
If Titanfall is multiplayer only and won best next gen, shouldn’t it win this award also?
Best Action Game
Destiny (Activision Blizzard)
Similar as above.
I get they don’t want one game winning everything but still.
Yeah and Battlefield 4 and Titanfall are both on the PC and XBone so I don’t know where the distinction lies…
Shithead: at least for the first one, the reasoning probably goes:
Destiny is better that all of the PS4 exclusives, but not as good as titanfall
I was about to have a go at you for insulting him as he was making valid points. Then I saw his user name 🙂
You are probably right in regards to the exclusives, the award is basically what is the best game being released on PS4
But if titanfall is the best game full stop, then it has to be a better multiplayer game than destiny unless they are claiming that destiney’s multiplayer is better than titanfall but the solo game drags it below being best game. Which is really worying if that’s the case.
It depends on what version was brought to the show, & subsequently made playable to the judges doesn’t it?
So instead of the old Call of Duty vs Halo argument we’re gonna start having Titanfall vs Destiny arguments. Things haven’t really changed much.
Yeah Titanfall and destiny are in a very similar genre – it seems a little strange. Maybe the judges couldn’t decide which was better ???
Titanfall and Destiny are really completely different, though…
Would call them completely different. They are both FPS with a focus on futuristic weaponry.
Both seem multiple player focused. Although one is more focused on co-op rather than DM.
There are huge differences between them from the way we look at games but the are both “one of those shooty games”
I strongly disagree. That’s like saying soulcalibur and elder scrolls are the same because you fight people with swords… The focus of the games are completely different, as is the level and mission design. Saying they’re the same is kind of insulting to something as ambitious as destiny IMO. Not to rag on Titanfall; it looks like great fun.
Something that shits me is the “lets give a bunch of awards to games that haven’t been released yet” deal. I get that people are excited about about the new generation just around the corner and we have a handful of demos that show the games in their best possible light, but do we really have adequate enough information to say “best game at this”.
Gamescom is a slightly different case where we rate those that were presented rather than those that were released during the year but still.
Agree completely, they then go and splash these awards all over the game boxes… they should be renamed to things like “best marketing campaign” and “best cg trailer pretending to be the real game”…
Out of all those PS4 and Xbone games, only two are exlusive: Forza and titanfall, and titalfall is only a times exclusive. The times they are a changin
Oh please, rank and review games that haven’t even been finished yet, because games are ALWAYS as good as they appear at E3…
No “Best Platformer”?
I don’t really understand the hooha about Titanfall, not really following it but I have seen the videos. Mind you, I’m not that into FPS any more.
That being said, Destiny looks like fun.
Yea can anyone explain the hype to me? I’ve seen the trailers and it looks just like any other generic space marine shooter to me.
lol @ warthunder being a simulation. hahahaha wtf
I thought that was a bit weird, too. But have you played the Historic battle modes with simulation settings or just the arcade mode like I have?
