What? Sorry what’s going on here? A burrito eating contest you say, at a video game launch party. I guess burritos are delicious. But what do they have to do with bloody video games and what do they have to do with Grand Theft Auto V? I guess it’s not important, really. Burritos for everyone!
(Well actually, if we’re going to be pedantic about it, one of the vehicles in the Grand Theft Auto series is called the Burrito — and its been around since Vice City on the PS2.)
Here is the burrito situation: EB Games is hosting a launch party for Grand Theft Auto V at World Square in Sydney. Everyone who pre-orders and pays off the game before this coming Monday is eligible to attend and they will receive a free Guzman e Gomez burrito (they’re good burritos man).
Burritos are a big part of this event if you haven’t already guessed.
I have no idea how this Burrito contest is going to be judged, although I’m assuming it’s going to be about volume, as opposed to something like technique or deft, stealth burrito consumption. Shame, because I am an extremely dexterous eater of burritos.
But back to non-burrito business. That convenient and delicious mexican foodstuff may be the main event of the EB Games Midnight launch party, but there are plenty of other interesting things going on. There’s that video game everyone’s been talking about, Grand Theft Auto V, and a host of musical guests such as Alison Wonderland, Leah Mencel & Lee Monro and The Havknotz. I haven’t heard of these new fangled music acts but I am old and irrelevant. Your mileage may vary.
The party kicks off at 9.30 on Monday night in the lead up to the game’s release at midnight. Anyone with a fully paid off pre-order from the following stores is eligible for a free burrito…
Eastgardens
Bondi
Galeries
Broadway
Marrickville
Chatswood
Royal Randwick
Greenwood Plaza
Maroubra
Chatswood Chase
EB World Square
Darling Harbour
Birkenhead Point
Yum.

I want burritos for dinner now, curse you Mark!
It’s gotta be about speed.
naa, i thinks its gona be about the way you eat it, like if you close your mouth when you eat, or how you chew….
Going in or coming out?
As long as someone keeps Uhura out of the transporter room, I volunteer to allow Scotty to beam the burritos out of my stomach into space while i eat them. Place your bets!
Breaking Bad jokes aside… I thought they banned eating competitions cause people die?
Coincidence???, i already have a dodgy stomach today (i’ll leave out the details but you can imagine) and when i read the headline my stomach growled and not in a good way 🙁
I think I had the opposite effect.
are they all in NSW? What about VIC?
Seeing as the location of this midnight launch (and the aforementioned contest) is in Sydney, I wouldn’t expect many people with Victorian pre-orders will be there.
Ah, I missed that it was at a place in Sydney. Thought it was at all those stores. MASS BURRITOS FOR THE PEOPLE!
WHERE’S MY BURRITO? WHERE’S MY BURRITO?
Wait… Gir?
Homer.
Heh… That’s it!
They should change it up a bit, instead of the normal ‘how many can you eat in a specified time’ type of contest, they should give you one and you have to be the most eloquent at describing it’s flavour
Jacked mentions eating contests as part of Rockstar’s traditional internal launch parties, so perhaps that’s what inspired this peculiar event. If I remember rightly, they should be eating deep fried cheese balls if they want to make it really authentic though.
Eastgardens, you say…
Now you know what it’s like reading half of Kotakus posts.
I’m gonna guess there’s a burrito minigame somewhere in GTAV. Or Guzman e Gomez is looking to get associated with hooker murders and gun violence. One of those 😛
eep chatswood westfield or mandarin? i want a burrito haha
Who has time to go to weekday midnight launches of games?
Thank god for unemployed, welfare dependent gamers!
No, dude. I am taking annual leave from Tues thru Fri…but I’m sure you’ve got a judgement about that, too. I just spewing because I live in the most backward city in the World. Where EB aren’t allowed to open at midnight. That’s why we get paid so much in Perth…compensation…

Don’t worry I haven’t heard of any of those ‘musicians’ either.
If you’d actually read the event page, you’d find that the first 400 people get a burrito. There is no “Burrito Eating Contest”, there is a cosplay contest. I don’t know where you manage to get Burrito Eating Contest from. Kotaku’s finest journalism at work yet again.
