You’ve got a successful game design career that’s wound up with millions of people all over the world playing and loving something that you made. Not to mention all the poutine that you can eat. Why would you leave that? Let two guys in lab coats who used to work at Ubisoft tell you why.
You may not know the names Malik Boukhira and Simon Darveau but you’ve probably raved about some of their work. The co-founders of Montreal-based Spearhead Games once worked at Ubisoft, where they helped build entries in the Prince of Persia and Assassin’s Creed franchises. But they got frustrated toiling away inside of a huge corporation and what they call AAA fatigue.
Tiny Brains is centered on a quartet of lab animals who get superpowers thanks to all the weird experimentation that’s been done on them. They team up to try to escape the lab they’re trapped in and players will need to use powers like teleportation and ice block formation co-operatively to help set the mutated critters loose.
Sitting down to play Tiny Brains was one of the best times I had at PAX Prime. After crowding on a couch to partner up with a bunch of people I didn’t know, I found myself laughing, yelling out strategies and high-fiving sweaty stranger palms when we beat challenges. The best co-op game ever? Maybe. You’ll get your chance to try it out in November when the PS4 launches.
