$US800 million. That’s the first-day sell-through number for Grand Theft Auto V — the highest in GTA history, the corporate overlords at Take-Two say.
$US800 million. In 24 hours. Via Take-Two:
“All of us at Take-Two are thrilled with the initial response to Grand Theft Auto V. Once again, the team at Rockstar Games have outdone themselves, setting the entertainment industry’s new standard for creativity, innovation and excellence,” said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman and CEO of Take-Two. “Beginning at midnight on Monday, consumers around the world gathered in anticipation to be among the first to experience the evolution of this remarkable series. In North America alone, more than 8,300 stores opened their doors at midnight to welcome fans whose loyalty and enthusiasm were rewarded with what The New York Times called ‘the most immersive spectacle in interactive entertainment’. We are incredibly proud of Rockstar Games’ creative achievement and could not be more pleased with the success of this launch.”
For context, that’s about 5.6 Atluses.

•polite golf clap• I say, good show old chap…..
I am finding it very refreshing to see a so many articles about a new release that’s not accompanied by an equal number of apologies for releasing a broken product
I say, good show old chap for actually releasing a finished product unlike many of your peers :o)
Imagine if they released it on PC day 1 too
Does this only count the 24hrs in USA time or September 17 throughout the world? Either way that is pretty, pretty, pretty good.
GTA 6: $800 million isn’t cool anymore, you know whats cool? $1 billion.
Cue Dr Evil’s little finger
Game is good to look at but gets very boring with it’s bland story and same as before gameplay.
Good to see them make some dollars though.
Saints Row IV was a lot more fun.
So … in one day it made roughly 3 times what it cost to make the game. Cheers, Rockstar and Take Two
im sure there are millions of people waiting for the PC release with their $$$.
This is where movies just can’t compete.
That’s what I wanted to see… seems to be destroying all the COD records also. GTA returns to the top of the heap.
yeh definitely calling it now.. Game of the Year, or last 5 years lol
If that game cost around $250 million (from estimates) to make and advertise…what sort of cut is the publisher taking from sales? What sort of margin do games work at? Around 55%?
Take THAT! Infinity Ward.
Yeah, except Activision make big dollars every year.
I liked the following passage from The Age this morning [probably SMH for you Side Knee folks]….
I’ll be keeping this little nugget in my list of facts and stats to use during the impending discussions of how “games are for kids” with the relo’s.
Hardly relevant given the price difference between going to the movies and buying a new game on release.
For every person that buys a game for $80, 4x as many people need to go to the cinema to equal the same turnover.
Yeah, and they’ll come back with “Grand Theft Auto…isn’t that that violent game that causes rampages among teenagers?”
Trust me, had this discussion. The only rebuttal is to find a nice hard wall, face it, and THEN continue the discussion with the wall as more sense will be had all round.
No. I get more enjoyment out of continuing to let them to dig their hole by just replying with logic.
Post hoc ergo propter hoc usually takes care of that one. I hear that 100% of all teenage murderers drank *water* too…… The “evidence” is just so clear!
Then followed up by a nice dose of “empirical evidence vs belief” usually finishes off the argument with them leaving in a huff, having had their view of reality laid on in front if them and subsequently destroyed. It doesn’t change their mind, and I’m still frustrated. But it feels better than simply walking away letting them think that they won.
Discussions with people who don’t “believe” in things usually go the same way. Just in general, those who start with a conclusion and seek out evidence to support it usually collapse under the weight of their own bullshit when logic is applied.
The ironic thing about it, is that ultimately GTA gives me the most cathartic outlet of my frustration with these people than anything else. If anything, I’d argue that GTA acts as a preventative measure in a lot of ways relating to violent behaviour.
This was at the top of watercooler conversation this morning. Non-gamers just didn’t get it. A quick trailer or 2 and an explanation of just what you can do in this ‘world’ and they had to concede – games have arrived.
I begged to differ. I told them that this is just the newest in a long trend – games haven’t arrived – they’re taking over.
