Well that’s unsurprising given that Destiny has been used in PS4 marketing pretty much since it was announced, and I am sure Bungie want to distance themselves from being thought of an an Xbox brand as much as possible.
Why would they want to separate themselves from the community that has provided them with so much money and loyalty? That really doesn’t make sense.
I don’t think they’re (intentionally) distancing themselves from the Xbox market, they’re just trying to get a stronger grip on the PS market.
And I’m guessing Activision signed some kind of deal with Sony.
They said they just don’t have a studio big enough for more than 4 platforms. When faced with having to limit the number of platforms to develop for, it makes sense that the PC and WiiU would be first on the chopping block.
why does that makes sense?PC is not a second rate platform… especially compared to the two outdated last firms that the game will probably have to be cut down to play on
No one is going to argue that the PC doesn’t have superior hardware, but it’s not about that, it’s a financial matter, not about which platform has the best graphics.
I’ll explain why.
For starters, they want to maximize sales so they wouldn’t choose Sony over MS or vice versa, so they have to develop for both brands to get maximum sales. And they’re not going to develop only for next gen and ignore the current-gen PS3 and 360 considering there’s some 160 million units out there. And they can’t just do current gen without going next-gen where the future console market is and all the sales that go with it.
The WiiU is not a reliable platform for selling big blockbuster online shooters for blatantly obvious reasons.
And that leaves PC. Games sell fewer copies on PC and there’s a lot more pirating on the PC. The simple fact is there is just less money to be made on the PC. So, apart from superior hardware what are the advantages of developing for PC? Making games on a higher end platform doesn’t keep the lights on.
If you were in Bungie’s position, which of the 4 platforms on which Destiny is coming out would you ignore in order to work on a PC version?
Typically that would make sense except that the SDK for XBone has a lot of tags and hooks used to develop for DirectX11.2 as well. It would require extra work no doubt about it but nothing like developing for a completely separate platform.
I’m sure if Bungie had the resources develop for PC they wouldn’t leave money on the table. My point is that when it comes down to having to sacrifice a platform on which to develop, the PC unfortunately is a candidate.
“No one is going to argue that the PC doesn’t have superior hardware, but it’s not about that, it’s a financial matter, not about which platform has the best graphics.”
I’m not even talking about graphics…I’m talking about Viability of a platform
“And that leaves PC. Games sell fewer copies on PC, The simple fact is there is just less money to be made on the PC”
where are you getting that from? retail sales?
” and there’s a lot more pirating on the PC”
which is not as big a problem as devs make it out to be
You think the more dated tech of the next-gen consoles being used as the the lead development platform might cause things to be held back or stunted?
That’s a fair point. That’s a conversation worth having I suppose.
As far as console titles making more money. It’s obvious. If the PC was more advanced, viable and lucrative platform, why would Bungie be skipping it?
