NSFW: Virtual Reality Sex On The Oculus Rift. We All Knew It Was Coming.

Look, this post comes with a massive caveat. Some of you are going to watch this and you are going to be a little weirded out. That's because this is strange. Very strange. But it a sense, I knew it was coming. It was only a matter of time. Japanese developers have created a virtual reality sex simulator using the Oculus Rift. It is insane.

It's completely up to you. You don't have to click on the above link. Just be aware that, if you do, things are going to get awkward. You are not going to feel good about the human race. You are going to wonder why you clicked on this, you may dip into some sort of existentialist malaise. You may not want to eat lunch. These are all possible side effects.

But another side effect is hilarity. Complete and utter hilarity. Then sadness. A deep penetrating sadness. The world we live in is about to change forever.

8/10 for the pun in the title.

      Also the second-last sentence.

i figured that last paragraph was less about the pun & more a commentary on my sex life.

If you get co-op multiplayer functioning well with this thing, you're you'll wind up with all the filthy, filthy smut money you'll ever need.

I think the most curious part of this is that he's banging some virtual jailbait in a room with at least a dozen or so people and no one seems to care.

Speaking of jail. I can see a use for this in high security prison conjugal visits.

      It's Japan. Their all 18+

Even says so on the label! =P

The collectors edition comes with a Fleshlight.

Why is it that the automatic response is that virtual sex is creepy, insane and "sad"?

Yet, virtual slaughtering of countless people is considered to be ok?

We live in a very fucked up society.....

      I am wish edenist

I can see a lot of positive uses, this initial test phase is lame but I can see uses outside of just self pleasure. And even if they only use it for self pleasure, what's the issue? you didn't think of it first? I certainly wish I did the money to be made would be astronomical!

Murdering people in game isn't something most people do to satisfy real world urges directly. Killing people in game is more about satisfying a competitive urge where killing is akin to scoring a point in a football match.
This stuff translates more directly. It's something you can rub your junk on in order to convince yourself you're having sex. I've got nothing against someone using vibrators and flesh lights, but this goes a little further. It's like naming a blowup doll or buying a vibrator that tells you it loves you.
Honestly I've got nothing against the tech itself, seems like a fun novelty, it just seems to be aimed at people who have given up on finding human companionship which is just sort of sad.

I'm still not sure what the problem is. Sure, its simulating a real urge, but its not an urge I have an inherent problem with. Sex is great! People do it all the time!

I'm not saying it's a bad urge, I just think that's what separates it from video game violence and makes people a lot less comfortable with it.

I'm not saying violence and sex in games are the same, or even that people get the same thing from them.

But why is it that sex is always judged to much more harshly than violence? More importantly, why are people judged for playing a game for sex?

We've decided people are mature enough as adults to make the choice to play a violent video game, and we don't care that people do. Yet, if someone chooses as an adult to play a virtual sex game, why should they be judged any differently?

Actually..... on thinking about this some more, I'm going to speak my mind here.

I know you're a great guy, and you do a lot for video game journalism and I enjoy your writing.
But I think you have very quickly lost perspective.

Was it not too long ago that we were fighting for recognition by the community that video games weren't just for children? To get an 18+ rating for adult games!
I'm sure those that you yourself were trying to convince that games aren't evil probably thought that you spending your Saturday evenings smashing blocks and collecting imaginary coins and mushrooms was incredibly sad.

We all play games for many different reasons. For fun, for socialising, to escape reality.

Do not judge others for what you may deem as a "weird" or "insane" use of video games, for then you are no better than those in the ACL......

EDIT: For the record, I called Mark "a complete and utter dick" in this post. It wasn't in an aggressive manner in my head as I typed it, but was ultimately the wrong thing to write. So, sorry.

This topic certainly does seem to be quite polarising! ;-)

Jesus mate, you're thinking a bit too much into this. Mark wasn't even really painting it as bad. Plus, killing people in a videogame and having sex with people in a videogame while actually being stimulated sexually outside of the videogame are two completely different issues that are wrong for completely different reasons.

Tone down the vitriol, you're being a tool.

I don't have a problem with it being painted as bad. I find issue because it appears to be a lack of perspective in the matter. It takes the same tone and draws the same conclusions as the articles put out by those who opposed the R18+ rating.

          Also,

Why is it wrong, may I ask?

And if you find it "wrong", why should your judgement apply to anyone who chooses to do this?

I don't find it "wrong", really. People can do whatever the hell they want in their own homes, none of my business. I would assume Mark has a similar view. I don't think it should be banned. I do think it's weird, pathetic and degrading. Whereas the ACL would call for it to be banned and that it's rotting our youth's brains and all sorts of BS, I just think it's objectionable and I'm content to say my piece and leave it at that. As is Mark. As you would have realised if you hadn't been so oblivious to the fact that this article has a humorous tone.

"Then sadness. A deep penetrating sadness."
Might not have been calling it bad, but sure was painting a negative picture of it.

I'm with you @edenist. The dev's of this can create whatever they want.
Why does society have some strange taboo of sex when it's a natural normal thing?

Hey I think you took it too far with this post, but you know what, you are fundamentally right.

I apologise if it did come across as "vitriol", as some have said.
I didn't mean it personally, but on the tone of the article. In my head it reads a little less aggressive. But it's a little lost in plain text.

Hey, appreciate you being frank. Maybe calling me a dick was a step too far! But you sincerely made me think twice, so I appreciate it. I was just joking, but you're right. I don't think it's anyone's place to judge at all.

And you know what, I'm probably going to try this thing out anyway, so I can't judge! lol

you've given me a post idea for your christmas wishlist article :p

My partner's going to be so pleased, haha

That's true man. A very good point. A great point even.

everything that we do and enjoy is a form of masturbation. Everything.
It all comes down to those neurochemicals.

I feel like the author of this post hyped up the feeling this would instill! I'm still just feeling apathy!

He's got a point. Violence is clearly worse than sex (despite them consistently being lumped in the same category), so surely virtual sex ain't no worse - perhaps even better - than virtual mayhem? I personally find war games like COD and BF4 pretty appalling in their glorification of gun violence.

Edit: This was meant for edenist's post above

Thanks...... Agree with everything you said too.
More and more recently, BF and CoD have started to make me really uneasy when I play them. I cannot help but objectively look at what I am playing for "entertainment" and start to get creeped out.

And no, I don't think they should be banned, nor should people stop playing them. They don't make me into a murderer. I'd just like a bit more of an objective look at is acceptable compared to what is apparently taboo in society. Currently it's completely backwards.

True. 'Realistic' war games always seemed a bit bad taste to me. I didn't mind Spec Ops: The Line though, as it was meant to be disturbing.

I find it funny that he's being filmed in a room with other ppl thrusting his heart out lol

Knew it'd be the Japanese first :P.

Actually, the Austrians have been contemplating this for a while too. While I won't link anything, I'm sure you can look up ThriXXX and the Occulus Rift at your own discretion.

Been waiting for this since Red Dwarf's Better Than Life ep.

Why does anyone find something like interactive VR pr0n offensive, strange, odd or whatever the case may be, when there is already world wide over population...IMHO, if someone male or female wants to bump virtual uglies instead of adding another person to the total, by all means...please do, go and enjoy yourself and your virtual cooch and/or schlong!

Well that's an unexpected use for the novint falcon (the thing the guy is thrusting into)

    Haha. Phone sex.

Is it compatible with Custom Maid 3D (edit: I wrote this before watching the video) and World of Warcraft?

Once the entire human genome is decoded we may be able to reproduce over the internet without the risks of STDs or computer virus'.

Custom Maid 3D had Occulus Rift support a while ago: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/07/penis-powered-game-gets-oculus-rift-support/

The fun thing is, it's just a modified Novint Falcon, so you could theoretically use it for any mouse based activity. Would certainly add an interesting new challenge to FPS games.

Hmm ... and my Oculus Rift arrived just today, coincidence?

...Yeah the effect may have been a bit exaggerated....

Too late - YouTube removed the video already.
