War Thunder‘s one of those games flying around in its own orbit. Lots of players — five million PC players currently in an open beta — not a lot of hype. The guys making it say that it’s the most popular aviation game ever, which might be why it was at today’s big PS4 event. But it’s also a game that’s exploiting the system’s capabilities in interesting ways, like letting you play like you do on a PC.
So far, the free-to-play WWII action simulator made by Gaijin Entertainment is the only PS4 game I’ve heard about that supports the use of a mouse and keyboard. And flight sticks. But that support isn’t of the plug-and-play variety. Gaijin president Anton Yudintsev told me that letting players use non-Dual Shock 4 input devices takes some effort from developers to do.” Mouse and keyboard play was possible on PS3 but it required special devices or converters to happen.
The PS4 version of War Thunder does some other intriguing things, too. It’s cross-platform, which means that PS4 players will be playing on the same servers as PC gamers. And it uses the PlayStation Eye camera for head-tracking, letting you change the viewpoint in the game simply by turning you face in a different direction. I didn’t get to see either the head-tracking or the
Planes are the main draw of War Thunder but playable tanks are coming soon. Dogfights aren’t about wearing down a aircraft’s hit meter. Rather, impacts on specific places can take someone out with the quickness. A well-placed bullet into the cockpit can kill a pilot, leaving the intact, otherwise unharmed plane without anyone to fly. Gajin’s hyper-researched title will also have more than 300 aircrafts — bombers, strike fighters, fighters — to control in single-player or multiplayer. Look for it to hit with a launch across Europe-first on 11/29.

Damn USB keyboards/mice….. if only the PS3 had a port which they could be plugged into directly!
You could plug them in, but without a converter, they wouldn’t work with most games.
So pretty much the same situation as the PS4 then.
There is at least one PS3 game (Unreal Tournament 3) that could use a mouse and keyboard directly. Adapter hardware is only needed for games that only support controllers.
Exactly.
Eve Online’s FPS, Dust 514, also works on PS3 with keyboard and mouse.
Incorrect actually.
Most developers actually were probably using keyboards and/or mice on their debug/dev kits for various functions during development. It doesn’t take any special hardware, it just needs to be written to support it, and it really isn’t that hard.
Thing is, it’s a technical requirement that the game can be played with the standard gamepad controller, so most devs probably didn’t bother with other input methods due to that reason.
“I didn’t get to see either the head-tracking or the”… what?
Ps 2 let you play age of empires 2 with a keyboard and mouse, its how I used to play it between dead pc’s.
hell yes!
level 14 Japan on warthunder
love the game to bits,
Hopefully they release a OCE server soon though since 350+ ping is annoying.
Yeah, it is a very fun game. lvl 9 Russian and Britain with lvl 8 German. Still trying to find a plane that I good at flying. The BF 109 variety seem good so far, but I love the punch of the Yak 9T. Ping of 300+ is a pain though, would love some local server action.
Yeah I don’t understand that they have this functionality which could convert a chunk of PC gamers to hardware that doesn’t require constant upgrading yet they don’t utilise it anywhere near enough.
Because part of the attraction of the hardcore PC gamer is upgrading their rig and pushing games to their system’s limits.
So how does this head tracking work??? I turn my head, but I have to look at the tv fixed in front of me???
Sounds a bit tacked on and useless like all motion tracking stuff sony have fucked up… Give me a rift version!
Sounds like it’s for the occulus rift too BUT you’re assuming that it takes a full head turn in real life to get a full head turn in game. If the game is designed such that a say 45 degree head turn in real life represents 180 degrees in the game, you could still watch the TV.
i’m totally not surprised about this… the game plays like shit on PC with a controller… and I’m a controller junkie… i play everything i can with a controller, but this game is no good with it 🙁
In America you use Xbox controller to play games on computer. In Soviet Russia…
