Dark Souls is a beautiful game in more ways than one. It’s a terrific feat of design, for starters. But it’s also just lovely to look at, if you can relax for five seconds and take in the view.
From Software’s masterpiece is the latest project of Duncan Harris, Dead End Thrills maestro and noted video-game photographer. He’s been taking shots of the game, modded on PC, that look better than any Dark Souls screenshots I’ve ever seen, including promotional ones. Considering how dire things were when the PC version first launched, the images below are even more impressive.
Behold, and be sure to click to embiggen:
Harris’ mod notes are include a humorous addendum:
Tools and tricks: 8K rendering, timestop and graphics enhancement via DSfix; jim2point0’s free camera table; patience of a saint.
Heh. For more, and for higher-res versions of these shots, head over to Dead End Thrills.

Just in time to brush up on your dying skills before the next game.
Wait, that’s what the dragon looks like? Jeez, someone call a dentist…
Must. resist. temptation….
I have avoided Dark Souls as I really have little free time in my life… but each time a Dark Souls story appears, my resolution slips a little more…
Hey, are you one of those gamers who feels annoyed (and a little betrayed) that publishers are forcing developers to create and cater their games to non-gamers in recent years?
Then pick up Dark Souls! A game that can only be conquered by gamers!
Some gamers.
ALL gamers! >:[
Its not that time consuming I mean I saw some guy on youtube pass it in an hour.
How hard can it be?
The reputation it has for being brutally difficult isn’t really warranted IMO. It’s not difficult, it’s demanding. It requires patience and perseverance, and if you stick with it you will improve. I thought it was impossible when I first began playing it and hit the first major boss, but on the run I finally beat him, I did it without even taking damage and came away feeling like I’d do it easily if I had to do it again.
That looks amazing. Almost can’t believe they’re legit screencaps of a game that’s three years old!
Edit: DARK SOULS \o/
Legit screencaps of a game that’s three years old, rendered at 7680×4320 (8k) and with filtering and post-processing applied. Basically they’re bullshots. But I think it also shows the strength of the art design in the game as well.
Yeah, I’d love for the game to be playable looking like that 🙂 Hopefully DS2 can bring us closer! Although I must admit with some cranked up settings, and unlocked framerate using Dsfix, you can get the game looking pretty damn nice – which you can usually enjoy right before you die 😛

Does anyone else feel mislead by the headline that this is a mod and not an actual patch?
