One might wonder: how the hell do you turn a game as cinematic as The Last of Us into a movie? One will keep wondering. Sony’s doing it, working alongside Naughty Dog and Screen Gems to make their PS3 hit into a film.
Naughty Dog bosses Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra are teaming up with Evil Dead director Sam Raimi for the film, and The Last of Us directors Neil Druckmann and Bruce Staley will be involved as well. No word on a plot just yet, other than the logline from Deadline:
Hardened survivor Joel teams with young and capable companion Ellie to journey through a radically transformed world some 20 years after an infectious pandemic ravages humanity. The game has won numerous awards and has been a big seller since its release last summer.
So, um, it’s The Last of Us? I guess we shall see.

Ellie Page?
Ellen Page.
Yeah, Ellie Page, exactly. I think her face and overall visual vulnerability would be perfect for it, but I think I’m too much in love with Ashley Johnson’s voice.
I know she has a baby face, but she’s too old to play Ellie in a movie.
Yeah you’re probably right. I think she could probably pull it off, but it’d be much better if they could actually get an actual teenager for the role.
I’m calling it: It will be bastardised beyond recognition/get stuck in production hell, or I will eat my hat.
Yes, you can quote me on that one.
Mark Wahlberg will play Joel. He will be part of a group of international antiquities dealers who travel across the ruins of the USA meting out justice.
I would watch the shit out of that tho.
David O Russel will be thrilled to hear that. At least SOMEBODY supports his idea…
I firmly believe that such a film pitch should stand on it’s own merits, and does not even need to piggy back of the success of a popular game.
Remove the gameplay?
Didn’t they do that with the Lego DC game/movie?
Maybe they should just make it into a TV show and then spend 3 seasons in a jail.
Well I’m glad Naughty Dog are involved so hopefully they’ll make sure the casting isn’t messed up.
They already made a Last of Us movie. It was called The Road and it was great!
Nicholas Cage as Joel
Nicoalas Cage as Ellie!
YESSSSSS!
Sony Exec 1: Oh look, a horse! We should flog it!
Sony Exec 2: It looks a bit dead sir
Sony Exec 1: Who cares! log it anyway! It worked so well for Nintendo!
Sony Exec 3: And if anyone asks, we’ll just use the excuse that it’s better than Sega with Sonic
Well done. Upvote for you sir.
Maybe they are flogging a horse but its still very much alive.
What is wrong with you people? The article mentioned Sam Raimi, director of Evil Dead and it doesn’t mention Sam Raimi, director of Oz: That film with James Franco I didn’t bother to see.
Or the original Spider-Man trilogy.
Imagine it now: Joel doing a strut down the destroyed street to the tune of Stayin Alive then doing a dance scene with an infected!
I walked into a sharehouse living room where the housemates were watching Spider-Man 3 (which I had not seen).
It was at exactly that point. I thought they were watching a high-quality SNL sketch with guest star Tobey Maguire, it never even occurred to me that something so fucking ridiculous could make it into the actual movie.
Think about how many people work on a movie and how many people at any point could’ve had the power to stop that from happening…
Gerard Butler would make a good joel.
If I were Sony/Sam Raimi, I would be making a very appealing offer to Frank Darabont to direct. (My never-in-a-million-years-would-they-say-yes pic for director would be Clint Eastwood, but that’s just me.)
And then go knock on Josh Brolin’s door. He’s pretty affordable by the looks of things.
Uh, Screen Gems only make those horrible Resident Evil/Underworld movies, this will be low budget and won’t have A-list talent.
Likely animated like the final fantasy films with voice actors.
