You know what would have made sitting through lectures on early modern European history a lot more bearable? Giant space lasers, and plenty of ’em.

Unfortunately, the renaissance painter Fra Angelico would have had to live another 500 years or so in order to get a chance to draw inspiration from the modern-day muse that is Space Invaders. But still-living painter Dan Hernandez has brought us the next best thing in a series of stunningly detailed paintings that reimagine classic video games as hagiographic Italian frescoes.

The series, Genesis 2014, is on display in New York City at the Kim Foster Gallery through April 26. Check out more of his work from the series below.
