Far Cry is going to the mountains — the next game in Ubisoft’s open-world shooter series will be set in the Himalayas, and it will be out in late 2014 for current-gen and last-gen platforms (minus Wii U).
Far Cry 4, a sequel to 2012’s successful Far Cry 3, had been rumoured for quite some time now. Today it’s official. Here’s Ubisoft describing the game:
Taking a sharp turn away from the lush island jungles of the top-rated Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4 is set in Kyrat, an untamed region currently ruled by a despotic self-appointed king. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the achingly beautiful views; Kyrat is a wild land full of perils. Once again, players will be able to craft their own stories as they travel through this exotic open world teeming with wildlife — using their wits along with an assortment of powerful weapons and diverse vehicles.
“Following the success of Far Cry 3, we wanted to take the franchise to the next level and create a game that will surprise players and exceed fans’ expectations,” said Dan Hay, Executive Producer. “Given the unique setting, we feel Far Cry 4 will stand out as a top first-person shooter and we’re eager to reveal more about the game in the coming months.”
Far Cry 4 will be out on November 18 for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.

Is it just me, or did they try to make the obvious villain look like Jeoffery?
No he looks like a metrosexual, 80’s-fashion-wearing, Patrick Stewart.
That’s Julian Assange.

I’d say that’s way too much of a resemblance for it to be coincidental which makes me wonder where the hell they’re going with their story.
Based on that picture, that’s a great call. Definitely agree with you.
Fry Cry 4: Wikileaks fights back
Looks like Sheogorath from TES to me.
Far cry 3 wasn’t perfect but it was so fun. I’m definitely looking forward to this.
Edit: Given the setting and plot, totally calling a sequence with “Hall of the Mountain King” playing like FC3 did with “ride of the Valkyries”.
And it’ll be awesome.
Hopefully they just remove any chance of this game being serious and just go balls out crazy, Farcry 3 got so close to basically being an 80’s slasher movie plot but fell short.
that’s what Blood Dragon was for 😀
That was an 80’s scifi action movie 😛
Also it was pretty rad.
But man Farcry 3 starts out super promising on the story front but just doesn’t quite make it, gameplay was still good though.
yeah, I agree the story line was pretty weak, good thing the gameplay was good. If they miss the mark we can always hope for Blood Dragon 2
Was so disappointed that most of the rest of the people in the group make it off the island. That opening video just makes them look like the worst kind of human garbage, just begging for some Friday the 13th type action.
Also moving on from Vas was a mistake, that guy was great.
Nah, then they jump the shark like Saints Row 4 did. I want some decent plot, then something like blood dragon afterward again to satiate my lust for mayhem and ludicrousity.
The funny thing is the original Crytek-developed PC game didn’t take itself seriously either. It’s only when Ubisoft bought the series that it tried to play things straight and serious.
I’d like to make some sort of comment about it being on last gen and scaled back, but fact is a game this budget, size and whatnot must’ve been in development since the day they finished 3…
Oh well, I loved 3. I’m eager for 4!
Sweet, they better bring back the wingsuit, had so much fun with 3, can’t wait.
Far cry 3 was such of an improvement on far cry 1&2 which I hated. Hopefully far cry 4 is just as fun as 3
burning down himalayan weed crops with a flame thrower? sounds good 😉
Guess I should probably try to play 3 by then.
So pumped for this, loved FC3, love the tropical island i just hope this time they include campaign co-op! co-op in FC3 was a little bland and repetitive
I’m pretty curious as to how this will look like visually. FC3 was a really good looking game but also performed brilliantly – especially considering the large numbers of enemies and huge environment. Now that we’ve got far better tech for consoles this should be pretty spectacular.
I can’t believe it’s releasing on last-gen consoles. This is holding back the whole industry!
Burning the plantation in Far Cry 3 is the best ‘Level’ or ‘Mission’ in any game I played last year. With the music and everything – truly top notch.
And the ‘effects’ when you stood too near the smoke lol
I’m actually worried about this. Ubisoft must have noticed the praise Far Cry 3 had and immediately set out to create a new game to retain those sales numbers.
I’m more worried that they’re doing their Ubisoft thing of throwing more developers at the project, thinking that’s what makes a game work, and it will come out feeling soulless.
Can’t wait!
I hope they bring back the artistic director of FC2 – I don’t think anything in FC3 even came close to looking anywhere near as lush. I also really enjoyed the constant sense of threat in FC2 – in number 3 it’s far too easy to become an overpowered super warrior. If they’re re-implementing the hunting/crafting system, I think it would benefit from some better pacing. Or maybe that was my own fault for just doing all the hunting/crafting in one go.
I was hoping it would be a prequel just so they could bring back Vaas. Once he was gone, FC3 was all downhill.
It looks like I’ll be fighting the frontman for a Swedish electro-pop band instead…
Really looking forward to my machineguns and explosives setting off avalanches that bury entire armies.
Oooo…, eh.. ok, four things:
1. Something about this seems a bit April 1st-ish.
2. FC3 was fairly close to perfect – easily in the top 3 games of 2012, which makes me;
3. Concerned about the quick turn-around.. rushed cash-grab? I hate ubisoft and I wouldn’t put it past those clowns.
4. The Andes would have been cooler.
Tentatively looking forward to this now.. but I have the ubi-fear.
I love FC3
i am very much looking forward to this no matter what its like.
Ooooh shit! Far Cry 3 was easily my GOTY for 2012 so bring on whatever they have installed for us in 4!!
FarCry was a classic and put Crytek on the map!
FarCry 2… I dunno… I can’t put my finger on it… just didn’t float my boat for some reason…
FarCry 3. Awesome stealth. Takedowns were wicked. Bad guys were interesting. All-round excellent.
FarCry 4…. a re-skinned FarCry 3 perhaps?
He looks like the lamest bad guy ever!
Vass clone story would be more appealing
The guy is obviously Diplo. It isn;t a stretch to have Diplo as a celebrity tie-in role.
Especially after M.I.A. ‘s paper planes (that he produced) was used in FC3.
