For a while now, giant eyes have been a thing in Japanese anime. We should be used to them. But damn they sure are distracting when learning about bullying. Creepy, even.

This is the work of manga artist Kaoru Igarashi, who created a manga series called Ijime (いじめ) or “bullying.” This is an important issue, and it’s great that Igarashi tackled it. I just wish the way she drew eyes wasn’t so… yeah.

This week, the Ijime original video anime from a while back was posted on 2ch, Japan’s largest forum in a thread called “This bullying anime is fucking funny hahahahahahahaha.” On 2ch and 2ch sites, commenters pointed out how “scary” the characters’ eyes were and that the whole thing seemed somewhat surreal.

In anime and manga aimed at little girls in Japan, the eyes can especially get huge, which is fine. Oddly, it makes watching Ijime all the more frightening.
