Making anime is difficult! There are all those frame to animate. There are deadlines. It’s rough work. And sometimes the end result isn’t quite up to par.

Previously, Kotaku showcased bad animated images, which are called sakuga houkai” (作画崩壊). As mentioned before, not all these types of images are accidents! Some are drawn this way on purpose. Whatever the rationale was, they stick out.
Let’s have a look at some of the best bad animation:

I actually really enjoyed the crazy frames and loose animation in that Pain vs. Naruto fight, it added to the crazy and insane amounts of power being thrown around.
Yeah, that particular fight was animated by one of the best sakuga animators in the industry. He doesn’t stick to the character designs, he distorts stuff and makes them stretch and melt in such a way that it really emphasizes the movement and action that’s going on. Naruto used him several times for stuff like that. Sure, if you freeze-frame it it looks crap, but it’s not meant to be looked at frame-by-frame.
Most of the rest of these are art fails (except the xxxHolic one, the stupidly long limbs is part of the strange art style in that. And there’s nothing wrong with the dude on the swing, he’s just standing on it because he’s being a badass or something, you can see from the way they’ve incorporated the chain that it’s deliberate) but the Naruto one definitely isn’t an artistic fail, it’s the opposite.
EDIT: The particular artist responsible for the off-model Pain stuff is Shingo Yamashita. Basically about 25% of the entire episode was completely keyframed by him, which is incredibly expensive if you know anything about the way Japanese animation is produced.
Interesting. I personally didn’t like it at all and found the Ultimate Ninja Storm 2 game sequence to look much nicer/stylistic/epic. At the time I assumed the animators had just gotten as lazy as the writer and was told by many that budget CUTS had caused it. The more you know.
I know you probably disagree but I found the animation for that fight some of the ugliest I have seen for such a pivotal point in an anime.
While from an animation view distorting is vital in conveying movement and intensity, I feel that it lacked enough frames to smooth the distortion like normal animation does when they distort which meant it was excessively distorted when watched in real time.
I didn’t say I liked it, I tend to agree with you. It’s not crappy animation though, just a bit odd. It’s definitely not lacking frames though, the opposite is the case.
IIRC he also did bits of the Naruto & Sasuke fight in the first series, and it also had some distortion but not as crazy.
I just attributed the goo-face to the fact it was used as a nail for a few tonnes of rock a little while earlier. Still, it looked weird as hell.
Although XXXHolic has a unique style in the manga (well, it’s more or less typical CLAMP style though Bayonetta had similar style too), it’s consistent and always feels like it works. The anime was very inconsistent with how it did the proportions of Watanuki and Domeki though, especially with regards to the size and shape of their heads and shoulders.
Also, the Yu Yu Hakusho swing image is definitely screwing up on perspective. The swings are low, but by comparison, Yusuke’s swing should be slightly higher.
Yeah, the holic series took the proportions to ridiculous extremes. It detracted from the show, which aside from that was pretty decent.
Agree. They normally mix up the style and or quality for their big fights and I enjoyed that fight a lot.
Reply fail – Thanks for the extra info @NegativeZero, gonna go look up more of his work! I don’t think I’ve watched any Naruto since that arc ended.
There’s a great series of videos on youtube that were taped from a convention presentation where they go into the Japanese animation production process and then talk about a bunch of the better sakuga animators. I don’t recall if Yamashita was in the list though.
Here’s the first part of the video series:
The rest should be easy enough to find after that.
Can’t believe Brian couldn’t recognise what is clearly Johnny Bravo
So six fingers is not OK, but manga characters etc having only 4 generally isn’t?
The XXXHolic anime’s incredibly inconsistent art style with regards to body proportions really bugged me and left me somewhat disappointed. I know it’s Clamp, but it was never that bad in the manga.
Inconsistent art style is also one of the biggest things that annoy me about Outlaw Star. It’s still amongst my favourite animes, just not as high on the list because radically inconsistent art quality always leaves me feeling disappointed.
