After weeks of teasing from series co-creator Ed Boon, today the name of the next game in the legendary fighting game series has been revealed: Mortal Kombat X.
As seen in the vague but delightful first trailer, Mortal Kombat X will arrive in 2015. According to the trailer’s YouTube flavour text, the game’s being powered by “next-gen technology”, which has me thinking Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
Fuelled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience.
With the success of the 2011 Mortal Kombat reboot and 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us, we’ve got two solid reasons to be very excited about a new game from NetherRealm Studios.
Update: According to the official press release, the game is being developed for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PC. Also from the press release, the following description:
Mortal Kombat X combines cinematic presentation with all new gameplay to deliver the most brutal Kombat experience ever, offering a new fully-connected experience that launches players into a persistent online contest where every fight matters in a global battle for supremacy. For the first time, Mortal Kombat X gives players the ability to choose from multiple variations of each character impacting both strategy and fighting style. Players step into an original story showcasing some of the game’s most prolific characters including Scorpion and Sub-Zero, while introducing new challengers that represent the forces of good and evil and tie the tale together.

WOW – that was like a cut scene and gameplay all in one!
WOW….
I want.
Fantastic, that looks amazing, loved the last one. Awesome use of the environment in that clip, can’t wait to see what other background objects can be interacted with, seems like they might have added a fair bit to it.
I wonder how many years will have to live with cross gen games for?
Multiple variations of each character? So like, original human Smoke, reboot human Smoke and possibly two variations of cyborg Smoke who all fight slightly different? Haven’t we had this already as, you know, separate characters? Waiting for clarification on that one.
As for story (lol Mortal Kombat has a story?), what’s happening to the characters that died in 9 (you know, almost everyone)? Typical hand wave, “they’re back because we can’t keep a lot of our fan favorite characters dead”?
Trailer was boss as hell though. If the fights look that good in the actual release, I’ll be VERY impressed.
I think they mean move sets, like how in some you could switch stance for new moves, the impression I’m getting is that you’ll pre select your move set before a fight, so same character with move variations maybe? I could be totally misinterpreting though.
Maybe it will be like MK Trilogy where you had Ninja Sub Zero and Maskless Sub Zero, and I think human and robot Smoke. It’s MK so they’ll just reskin existing models.
They killed off Liu Kang in MK Deadly Alliance then he came back as a zombie in the next game, so dying in MK doesn’t always mean dead. Maybe they’ll have another time travel mechanic to the plot.
9 had a bloody good story. It remade 1 – 3, given it was a reboot of the whole franchise. Condensing the first 3 games into 1 was a genius move and paid off in spades.
While I don’t believe for a moment the game will move this fluidly (please prove me wrong PLEASE), I hope to hell that’s the ingame engine and actually looks that great and we’re not seeing a watchdogs situation here…
As far as fighting games go, Mortal Kombat’s story is actually surprisingly deep.
Yes. It’s the only story in fighting games that’s worth a damn and has more thought put into it then many mainstream games and movies.
Blazblue.
I’m calling it now, it’s gonna be banned here for sure, and if it isn’t, it’ll be an edited version. I’ll import it, like I did the last one.
If this looks as good as the trailer I’ll be keen, but after how badly South Park Stick of Truth was cut for Aus I will NEVER buy a censored Australian version of a game again.
I’ll either import, or just skip entirely.
You can download the uncensored patch to patch South Park
On 360?
Ah sorry man I was being a dick master race and thought you were playing on PC. No luck on consoles 🙁
At least on the One I just change region and buy from the US online store, downloading from there gets me the game from the US servers. 360 the most reliable way is to import a physical disc from a PAL region, but UK was censored also.
Yeah it is rather sad. Funny thing is in Europe, only console version is censored and the PC is untouched. Apparently something about the age group of console gamer is lower than those on PC resulting the console censorship. Rather weird since it sounds like double standard lol
Considering you’d see the exact same material on the PG rated TV show with a little pixilation over it, the whole thing screams double standards. As well as the fact performing an abortion on a male is censored, while the female computer abortion is fine.
if it’s gonna fall foul of the Classification board, this is the section it’ll be in breach of :
on the plus side, I don’t think there’s been a game banned / censored for violent content since the introduction of R18…
There has been at least one game that has been severely censored/edited for the Aus and even UK release, and that is South Park: The Stick Of Truth.
that was for sexual violence.
I’m talking just violence. don’t think theres been one yet.
Hahaha, sexual violence. Try homophobia. The exact same things weren’t blocked if they weren’t performed on a man.
a man & a child being anally raped with a dildo-esque probe? yeah… that’s sexual violence. nothing to do with homophobia.
Joking male abortion blocked, while female abortion allowed? Yea, that’s homophobia.
no, theres no reference to the gender of any character in any of the classification board’s reports I’ve seen.
a child under 18 getting a coathanger abortion is pretty clearly in breach of the r18 category.
again, nothing to do with homophobia.
from the guidelines :
@35 So you haven’t played the game? Glad you have such strong opinions based on government reports then. Apparently only male on male moments are likely to cause reasonable offence, that offence in turn must be based on homophobia.
I haven’t played the game. I don’t have a strong opinion. I’m just describing how the laws work.
you’re claiming the board RC’d it based on homophobia. I’m showing you the actual sections from the classification legislation on which they based their decisions. sexual orientation is not a classifiable criteria.
there is no mention of the fact it was males being raped / having abortions performed on them in any of the boards reports. the grounds on which it was RC’d was that it involved sexual violence and /or abhorrent shit happening to a minor.
nothing to do with homophobia.
@35, and I’m telling you that one of those scenes, a joking abortion performed on a male, is later repeated, but not on a male. Guess which one was blocked? I guess on a male it’s sexual violence then?
The best part is, the blocked abortion is requested by the “victim”, while the one remaining in the game is forced, which seems more violent to me.
Only one of the blocked scenes involved a minor as the victim, and this wasn’t one of them.
ok, like I said, I haven’t played it. so in the second instance, who is it performed on?
Edited because I checked facts.. i was wrong…
The classification board RC’d the game, so the publisher removed the content. How is that the publishers fault? What is the publishers fault is selling us a game missing a tonne of that “south park” character, and the you lose Australia screens feel like they’re insulting you for buying the game.
Nah severely doubting that. It’ll just get an R rating now. We ended up getting 9 uncut in the end.
Time will tell I guess.
Really excited about this. I’m hoping they use the command inputs from Injustice rather then MK9.
This is AWESOME!
Scorpion is like the wolverine of Mortal Kombat. Everybody likes him even though he’s just an aggressive bastard.
I like Scorpion, but my favourite has always been Sub-Zero, don’t know why.
I’ve always been partial to Cyrax (NetSpam is sooooo cheap) & Kenshi (Blind swordsman FTW)
the original ninja guys are cool, but I think they’ve been outcooled since.
Subzero will always be cool……*dips sunnies* as ice….
“AOOOOWWWWWWWW…”
I wanna downvote this, but I cant bring myself to do it…
same here i like him cause he’s ‘cool’
boo doom tish!
Pun intended! \o/

Can you stop putting giant GiFs in the articles? It kills iPads.
Do they freeze up? you know, because sub zero…
That looks awesome.. Might be the game that makes me get a PS4..
Looks like the first fatality has been the WiiU version.
They look all rubbery and gumby, and the music is terrible.
I think i just soiled myself… is it 2015 yet…
Hurry peeps! http://i.imgur.com/NyYse.jpg
Ah shit that reminds me! I still need to get the achievement for playing as every single character at least for 24 hours each!
Persistent online? As in it won’t work without an online connection? Sure hope not.
Also boo, no Wii U version.
🙂
Fueled by Next-gen technology, available on 360/PS3.
I think I might play some more MK 🙂
Surely the classo board by now is aware that there are far more worse games out on the international market than this franchise…
