While sales numbers are the tried and true method of calculating the most successful video game console in a generation, on Facebook everything’s a popularity contest, and the most popular console in the US is the Xbox One.
The folks at the Movoto Real Estate Blog counted up the Facebook “likes” received by each of the three current-gen consoles — PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U — sorted them by state, and put it all together into this handy colour-coded map of the United States.
The Xbox One secures the most electoral votes, coming out on top in 22 states, compared to the PlayStation 4’s 19. Nine states were tied between the two. The Wii U didn’t win a single one, racking up less than half the likes of its two competitors in each of the fifty states.
What does it all mean? In the grand scheme of things, not much. Perhaps the Xbox One’s heavy focus on being an all-in-one entertainment solution perked the ears of more Facebook-savvy consumers. Or Wii U players are too busy socializing on the system itself to toss Nintendo a virtual thumbs-up. It’s just a fun little exercise, resulting in a green, blue and beige map.

Who even bothers liking a consoles facebook page?
So all your “friends” who you have never met, or have not spoken to in years can also not give a shit.
Would connecting to the console via facebook count? All those bloody PS users with notifications about earning trophy’s on facebook, just as bad as Farmville!
Why is this article even here. Not related to us and no interest in american xbots statistics.
Same Thought bro.
Because everytime we hear of sales or figures its what is selling in the US. No mention on other markets like Japan and Europe. Japan the Wii U is the best selling, Europe the U is selling like hot cakes in second place to the ps4
So true. Xbox sales is so horrible they keep throwing out US statistics to show that it is selling well. It pisses people off.
Who does? Kotaku?
Not only kotaku. Probably every journalism site worldwide will write how good Xbox sales is except other platform. My Wii u need some love.
Have we been browsing the same internet over the last 8 months?
lol Spot on.
Almost every article I’ve read talks about how poorly Xbox One sales are doing in comparison to the other consoles.
Yeah but in regards to Kotaku who bashed the shit out of Nintendo, is very quite on the XBONE.
The US is a very important market though (not that measuring it in Facebook likes means anything). To say the American XBOX One/PS4 performance is irrelevant to Australians is a bit short sighted. For better or worse it is a major influence on the global games climate.
From his comments it’s pretty clear he’s just annoyed about the xbox part of the statistics.
:/ we don’t have to start a console war just because this article is completely irrelevant to us Australia. I wish they write more article of the current situation of every console rather than researching about Facebook likes of specific console. Even if this is statistic about Wii u like or ps4 like I don’t really care
Sure doesnt seem that way guy from your above comments.
Did you read the article? They did research all three consoles to produce this map. It’s not just Xbox statistics, it’s that Xbox tops the statistics in the majority of US states.
Is not telling us what’s selling in Japan equally as irrelevant though? America would be moreso relevant due to its similair tastes to Australia, its more westernised culture and its higher population. Plus its closer ties to Australia means it would be a better point of reference, so therefore, by rights, America would be a more credible place to reference than Europe or Australia, and even then, I question WHY we don’t hear about Australian statistics themselves?
This isn’t sales, this is “likes” which don’t mean shit. In fact I wonder how many people liked the pages of the opposing console just to stir shit with fanboys? >.>
Or how many people like both and don’t own either?
The title does say ‘popular’, not ‘best-selling’. What people like does seem relevant to that.
I still “liked” your comment even though it “doesn’t mean shit” in the grand scheme of the universe.
Not to mention the number of fanboys that like one or the other despite being unable to afford either.
Hey Kotaku? Don’t just give us Facebook opinion polls for the US. If you want to appeal to your Australian audience, give us sales statistics of how well the Wii U, PS4 and XB1 are selling in Australia, perhaps informing us as to which state’s population prefers which console, as was done with the map shown in this article.
Also using Facebook to gather data instead of getting info from the companies themselves just tells you which fanbase is particularly vocal online in which regions. It gives us little in the way of actual information, since folks can just vote for which console they prefer, even if they don’t actually own one yet.
Yeah, that would sure be interesting, but this article is just talking about likes on facebook in America, it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.
I’ve seen people like pages like ‘I fucking love science!’ yet ask most of them, they wouldn’t have a clue what real science is… it’s lip service, nothing more.
That page is actually so bad, just reading the comments on a climate change post on that page is cringeworthy…
I fucking love science is actually a great facebook page!
Never said it wasn’t. It’s one I regularly visit, but there’s a big difference between understanding something and paying it lip service 🙂
fair enough dude 🙂
This article is about popularity, not sales. It says it right in the title. I’m not sure what you were expecting, but the article delivered exactly what it said it would.
Interesting findings, but like someone else said, its only likes not actual ownership
My guess would be Xbox for WA, plenty of Xbox LANs in Perth I’ve been to no Sony LANs at all even when it was organized through Game it just didn’t get the numbers.
I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure the Wii U doesn’t have its own page – Nintendo have “Nintendo Gaming consoles” and “Nintendo portable consoles” or similar but don’t believe it’s specific. Also I often see sony boosting their PS4 page all the time on FB so basically they are buying likes…
