The New Online LEGO Game Is Diablo For Kids

Meet Bumblebee Girl. Isn’t she adorable, with her little wings and pot of honey and ability to completely obliterate skeletons, pirates and trolls with her area-of-effect attacks? It may look cute, but LEGO Minifigures Online is a challenging Diablo-style game.

Combining the joy of collecting little LEGO people with the endless-clicking of an isometric action role-playing game makes for quite a compelling little game, as I found out playing the LEGO Minifigures Online beta this weekend. Interested parties can sign up on the website and play right now. Or just watch me play it here.

As I said, very Diablo-esque, right down to ranged characters holding the space bar to stand still while they shoot. The difference here is that instead of picking one character, the player keeps a team of three in rotation at all times, and when one of them dies the player has to wait for respawn.

Paying players of the free-to-play game have less of a wait, of course. Members, as subscribers are called also get a free Minifigure pack to open every month, as well as exclusive access to certain optional adventure zones.

The other big difference between this and Diablo is Funcon’s game doesn’t care much for balance, so it can handle the 31-or-so characters available to randomly purchase in the beta. Each character gets an attack and a special skill, and it’s up to players to find a combination that works for them.

While players can party up, the game is incredibly kid friendly. Chat is only available to members, and even then the system’s filter will keep offensive terms from entering chat. Hell, I couldn’t even use the word “Bumblebee”.

LEGO Minifigures Online isn’t very deep from what I’ve seen, but when you find the right combination of characters and the hideous fire monkeys and ghost pirates start to drop, it’s quite satisfying.
